So far, I have only had earphones, Sleek-Audio SA1, and a set of RE0.

This will be my first set of full-sized headphones.
A friend let my try out his Grado SR80i, but they sounded a bit too similar to the RE0, in my opinion.

I'm looking for something very musical with fairly tight bass, mids and highs that don't sound muffled, and generally fun to listen to.
At work I have 8 hrs a day I will be spending with these things, so comfort is a factor.

Most of the listening will be with classic rock, rock, acoustic, and a bit of electronic:
Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Jet, The Strokes, Iron & Wine, Ratatat, etc.
No preference on open or closed, my co-workers have open headphones and sound leak seems to be negligible.

I have looked into Sennheiser 598 and Grado SR225i, but I'm not sure if either would fit the bill or not.

My budget is $300.

Thanks.

I believe that the Sennheiser HD598's would suit your needs. In my opinion, that HD 598s are the comfiest headphones that I have tried and can envision myself using them for hours on end. The Sennheisers have a tight, controlled bass, and vocals mid to highs sound great. Acoustic and classic rock is truly where the 598s will shine. You will have great instrument separation while at the same time maintaining a wide soundstage. The sound of the guitar seems to amaze my ears every time!

Good luck.

If you are considering Sennheiser the hd600 can often be found under 300 on sale. I find it extremely comfortable once you stretch the headband out a bit (it is kind of clampy brand new). It should be a step better than the 598s and I love it with the same genres you listen to.

HD650s are found a bit over 300 on ebay, but it's totally worth it.

HD600s are cheaper, but I've never heard them.

Not if you count the amp you need to power them properly.

Who knows? Maybe he's got a good brand integrated or receiver lying around that would certainly do temporarily if not permanently.
