just to be different and not say swans how about the B&W MM-1 http://www.bowers-wilkins.co.uk/iPod_and_Computer_Speakers/iPod_and_Computer_Speakers/MM-1/Overview.html which looks lovely, or with that budget what about the ADM9T http://www.whathifi.com/Review/AVI-ADM9/ or what about some of the Quad actives the 9L 11L and 12L http://www.quad-hifi.co.uk/ranges.php?sector_id=2&range_id=5 or even the focal xs http://www.focal.com/en/home-audio-loudspeakers/focal-xs.php
the world is full of speakers other than swan and audioengine
As I am aware that there are many more out there, my main reasoning for hyping Swan is the excellent cost to performance ratio...period.
That aside, what are the costs like on the Quad stuff?...it looks real nice. Focal, I have a lot of experience with, is great stuff, but VERY expensive unless you can get it at "accommodation" pricing.

I'd skip over the MM-1. They are overpriced. I'd rather get a pair of Mackie MR8 speakers for that kind of money and get vastly better sound. I don't know if form factor is its advantage at its price point, but sound certainly isn't.
Or you can get a pair of MR5's and a nice DAC to go with them, or a pair of AV40's and an even better DAC.
Or if you have a good dac and integrated amp of sorts, then one of the B&W bookshelf passives. Spent a little time with the 686 and 685 locally and liked them.

From reviews I read of the MM-1's, they were MUCH louder than they look, and their bass was nice, crisp, and clear. Unfortunately, sound quality sounded as if the actual source was bad. I would not recommend those. I was looking at them and decided the A5's were the best bet. the swan's I came across shortly before ordering the A5's, but they had just come out at CES and I opted to go with the numerous glowing reviews of the A5's over the swan. M-Audio makes a nice set too but it is too bass heavy and less pleasing to look at, although only half the price as the A5's

Not necessarily.
Quad QPM1 MSRP at E200. Street price should be even lower.
Wharfedale 8.2 Active is also similar to Quad 12L Active.
There are a lot other good pro monitors at the low price range.

Check out the KRK Rokit series. I love my Rp8 G2s and they left me with money for an interface to optimize the sound quality! They'll easily fill a studio apartment with as much sound as you could want. They are pretty big though!
