We can all bring our over-heating HM601 units, then...

Actually, I'm not that big a fan of the ES9W/HM601 combo. Little too dark.

Hey Shig, I just found your review through google, maybe its a good idea to add hm601 to the title because, i at least always search this way for threads about this player on head-fi. I was wondering if you think that the shure se530 does synergize well with the hm601? I would GUESS not since they both seem to be warm and smooth but I would rather have first-hand experience first. I am planning to connect the shure to my iphone 4 and EITHER the lcip+ OR the hifiman hm601. Have you owned the clip or clip+ in the past? Thanks for any information, Greetings, Anouk,

Good review shigzeo. I'll say it's not surprising that the UI/firmware is trash. Seems to be a trend with alot of Chinese players. People should be free to purchase what they want, but in my opinion not having basic and usable firmware on a device at the 601's price point is insulting. They may as well be spitting into the buyers' eye. If the manufacturer can't be bothered to hire someone with more coding experience than a novice script kiddie to at least write a super basic yet clean UI (think sansa clip), would it have been so difficult to simply port rockbox to it?

Edit: I'll add that the above doesn't necessarily mean the 601 is a bad product, but it does tend to leave a bad taste in one's mouth.

Thanks for the review, shigzeo.  Good to hear about the CK10, DT880 synergy with the HM-601.  I've been contemplating about an addition and hopefully, the firmware, quirks can be addressed.  Otherwise, it's just a half-baked product that needs another generation refresh.

Hello! Lads and lasses, I don't find the HM601 that good with earphones that are mild or laid back. It is personal, of course, but if you think your Shure or your Earsonics, or whatever, is too laid back and polite already, you may not like the HM601 with them either. Earphones that keep a good frequency response to 16 000 should be no problem, but they shouldn't be tilted toward the bass/upper bass, to be enjoyed in full. Again, bright, shimmery headphones are great with the HM601.

hi guys. sorry to revive this thread after a long time but i'm in a decision making period between keeping my sony a845 or selling it and buying a hifiman 601. i'm using grado hf-1 as my headphone. my questions are (especially to shigzeo) :

- do you have any idea about how good / bad the synergy of grado hf-1 would be with hifiman 601?

- giving away my sony a845, and buying an 601, what would be my earnings in terms of sound quality and soundstage - width / depth? (i think a845 has a slightly narrow soundstage width)

thanks!

I yet to try Grados with HM-602 (soundwise sibling to HM-601). But I have a strong belief the synergy will be very good, like with Ety, RE-Zero, ATH-EW9, T50p.

And remember that Grados are not good on soundstage width.
