My dream DAP

An Ipod 5.5 G with a 120 GB hard drive, Imodded by Red Wine Audio, and Rockboxed. Does it get any better than that? Are there better portable sources??

Better at what?

Like clip+ is better because of its size

J3 is better because of its screen and battery

Whipmod is better in every way (except for the price?) cause they are iMod too just with better quality cable (from what i have read)

Hifiman HM801 is better because people say it sounds the best tongue.gif

I just mean all around - most especially sound quality.

Depending on if you use EQ or not, I'd think it's between iMods and Cowons. IMO it's hard to enjoy music if you don't like the sound sig, so I'm a Cowon guy. But that's just me, and there's really no "best" DAP since everyone will have a different preference.

I've never heard of Whipmod, but if what hotsport says is true, then I guess it's better.

Yeah, I would definitely use the EQ. So once it has been EQ'd doesn't the native sound signature of the source become irrelevant?

Yep. It can also clear up the sound and bring some details up front. If I had to choose between an iMod and Cowon for most detail, I really don't know, but I would pick the Cowon for sure.

DAPs are going to change pretty quick.

I think Apple is going to change iPods over to the new Thunderbolt standard in the next product refresh. When that happens, we'll be able to get optical out off an iPod. You might want to wait until the end of the year when iPods refresh for Christmas.

My dream player combines the benefits of 3 real DAPs:

- capacity of 240 GB iPod

- size of Clip+

- SQ of HM-602 or HM-801

I think last two points will be controversial for some next decades at least.

What's Thunderbolt? Optical out will be great for transportable rigs, but it won't help any for a pocket sized rig.

If it were for me the optical out would be of considerable impact to my decision. But being that my father isn't an audiophile I think he will be more than happy with the most recent generation of ipod.

Edit: I appreciate your contribution though. Sincerely, I think you are one of the best posters around here! You helped me out with my headphone purchase a fair bit. :)

We really need to distinguish between 'genuinely portable' and 'transportable rigs based around a portable player'. The main problem, for me, is that I have never heard Vinnie's creation, but I am confident that I could put a transportable rig together for less money than RedWine are asking for their version of the iPod.

I previously thought the iMod 'expensive' till I saw this $2.5 million iPhone:

I just realized I posted the wrong comment in the wrong thread. Sorry!

If need superior soundquality over ipod with no extra bulk then Hifiman HM-601, HM-602, HM-801, S;Flo 2, X7, Kenwood HD60GB and Sony X1060 are better sounding DAPs.

^^most of those are also bigger than the iPod with feature sets that make them worse in many ways. OP, it would be good if you could state your criteria for SQ. SQ means nothing unless you qualify it. There are many fine sounding devices, but they have loads of draw backs, and most of them (except the distortion and background noise) can be emulated very closely with a good EQ.
