Help with setup

I don't know exactly what to get, but I know what I want.  Currently I have an Auzuntech forte as my soundcard, a headphone, powered speakers and a subwoofer.

-I game so something that maintains my qaming audio or surpasses it.  I know the forte has some x-fi, eax features that are supposedly good.  I love my music and audio quality.

-I want to use EITHER the headphone or the speaker system when i'm lisetning.  Currently they are all connected to the soundcard and the sound comes out simultaneously.

-I like the simplicity of turning a knob to choose either headphones or the speaker system

I thought of two options

1) Right now i'm thinking of getting either the TC electronics level pilot volume control (http://www.tcelectronic.com/levelpilot.aspto mute the speakers while my headphones play.  I was in the camp that spending $100 is a little much and I might as well go DAC if it meets my needs.

2) DAC which allows me to choose which device I want to listen to (either headphone or speakers).  But i'm afraid I'll lose the advantages that the soundcard offers (if it even makes a difference in gaming audio?).

any ideas are much appreciated.

You can't just mute one ouput from within your OS?

As far as an external DAC, the ZERO has multiple inputs and outputs.  Keep your soundcard for the special effects.

Read up on it.  If you think you can save up even more over time, the Audio-gd FUN will be even better.

How do I mute it via OS?

I don't know about MAC, but with Windows you second-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar or go to  Sounds  in the Control Panel, select Playback Devices, and then mute one of the outputs, I think, or you open your soundcard's applet that lets you configure it, then change the output settings to what you want.

Ya I see what you mean.

The issue was that the soundcard playback option is connected to the speakers.  So speakers and headphones are basically the same output.  :/

I'm looking at the audio-gn FUN you recommended, not bad since I was looking at the nuforce HDP before
