Favorite Classical pieces to test hi-fi?? - Page 2

Rostropovich and the St Paul Chamber Orchestra playing a Vivaldi cello concerto, on Teldec. My go to - fantastic dynamics and organic sound. For larger ensemble imaging etc., Claudio Arrau with Royal Concertgebouw, Beethoven piano concerto no. 5, on Decca. Incredible recording, with only two top notch mikes behind the conductor (Haitink), palpable "you're there" feeling. There are several others, of course, these are just two top choices that came to mind.

I'm definately going to check out Melnikov's preludes.

Rostrapovich's playing Bach's Cello suites are great for testing mids and soundstage. One man, one Cello!

I'ts sooo important where the mikes are placed when recording, as you say rocdoc, only two mikes in the right place can give you the sound of actually being there, where as ten mikes in the wrong place can sound dreadfully unbalanced!

I'm currently listening to Bernstein's Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra on Sony and it is a great recording, raw and full of huge dynamics, you'd expect some distortion with the "in your face" recording but there is none!

You can never go wrong with a recording from the Concertgebouw! =D

Speaking of, did you guys get the 10 free downloads three years ago from the Concertgebouw website? Radio 4 did it for the 120 year celebration. I'm surprised it's still up! http://kco.radio4.nl/?lang=en It's only in MP3 format, 320kbps, but hey, it's free!

Really, anything you have listened to many times works - for me, it might be the Emerson String Quartet playing a Beethoven quartet, or Silverman playing the Diabelli Variations, or Gould with Goldberg Variations, or even a bit of Mozart's Requiem.
