I have posted my Heir Audio 8.A review, enjoy!

Very good review, as always. Good to see EM4 performs on a similar level. But when it comes to design and finishing, it really does look like the Heir's are in a league of their own.

Yes, there are differences between the two in sound quality levels, but the finish of the 8.A is very nice.  While I have some other CIEMs that offer very nice finishes, most don't offer artwork, or the level of artwork that Heir Audio does.  Looking at the 8.A up close reveals attention to detail!

Joe, any notes on how the dx100 pairs with em4?biggrin.gif

Nicely done Joe! I think you captured pretty much the same feeling that I get from listening to the 8.A.

Over in one of the Heir threads, there has been a user or two who have struggled with their newly acquired 8.A, due to the smooth top end. I think this has more to do with expectations than any actual deficiency in the 8.A itself. You don't buy an LCD-2 looking for a super sharp, zippy top end, and you don't buy a K701 looking for massive rumbly sub-bass. The 8.A does what it does and if that's the kind of sound you enjoy, it is among the best there is. But of course it won't be perfect for everyone.

That's why it is helpful to have comparisons from people like you, Kunlun, etc, who own the 8.A plus some other custom(s). Sometimes I even end up giving a recommendation that I don't personally love, because it fits better with what the person is looking for.

I'm working on a review of the Heir 4.A at the moment. Oddly enough, I think it is probably one of the most "universal" sounding customs I've heard.

I hate you all, now I'm going to end up with an 8.A at some point.

I remember a special synergy my EM3 Pro had with the HiFiMan 601 I had for a while before upgrading to the 801.  The 801 sounds great with the EM4, and actually my modded iPod with the Portaphile amp sounds even better; more spacious and punchy.  In comparison, the DX100 sounds good, but not quite as good and I would rate it a bit below the 801 as it sounds more digital and the EM4 isn't as cohesive or transparent from the DX100 vs. the 801.  But I would carry my modded iPod and the Portaphile for the EM4.

Thank you.  I hear ya on the expectations...products get praise on here, deserving or not, and some people will buy and not like what they hear because it is darker or brighter than they want. I bought the Tesla T1 based off all the good reviews and even some recommendations from people I knew, but it really wasn't my favorite sound.  I could attribute it to the sound signature, but in that case, it was more the presentation just didn't sound natural to me as the Rooth products have a similar sound signature, but are more natural IMO.  But I digress.

I get your point and I have been working behind the scenes for quite some time to characterize and group all the CIEMs I have in an attempt to make it easy for people to choose based off signature.  It is taking quite a bit of time and I don't have it right yet, so I will just keep reviewing until I get it.  And more reviews, especially with comparisons, really help.  I try to convey what someone will get, good and bad, with my reviews and hear ya on recommending different products for different preferences.  There isn't a one-size-fits-all in the audio world, just like there isn't for ice cream flavors!

I am looking forward to your 4.A review and I would love to review more Heir products and hear the range of products.  And are you using the word "universal" meaning it will appeal to the masses?

Just like to thank Joe for his help and advice.  As such I've decided to go with a pair of Minerva Mi-3's this time.  Much as I like the look of the Heirs (and who wouldn't)I've been burnt once dealing internationally so sticking to the uk.

Thanks

You're welcome.  I am looking forward to how you like it once you get it.  Are you getting any artwork or colors?  Minerva is the only silicone company, at least that I know of, that will do artwork.

I'll probably just go with a basic colour.  The audiologist who I went with spoke quite highly of minerva which was encouraging to say the least.  Don't like the minerva site much though, tried ordering them and it tried to charge me an extra £10 for a choice of basic colour!  So including a letter with the impressions to order that way.  There's always something.  From the reviews I've read (yours and mccols) the signature should be more or less what I'm looking for.

Cheers

Yep, universal meaning most people will probably enjoy them. The 8.A is brilliant imo, but not everyone is looking for that smoother top end or robust impact in the bass. The 4.A is neutral and transparent, likely to please most everyone to a pretty high degree.

I definitely concur. The 4.A is one of the most agreeable CIEMs around. I also wouldn't say that it has a lack of weakness, but rather that it is just very, very well-performing in all aspects. At the killer price that Heir is pushing it at, I'm not surprised it has been their best-selling model (though the 8.A is not far behind, IIRC). I'm very glad it was my first exposure to CIEMs.

Can't wait to have both in my possession!

hey guys! im rly interested in getting the Merlins as they seem amazingggg...but just how much bass does it have? I do like a little bit of bass boost but too much rly doesnt work with me. How would the bass compare to the likes of V-Moda M80 or AKG K550 or stuff like that?

I can't say for sure since I have only heard a demo, and demo bass isn't representative of the real thing, but I think there may be more bass emphasis than both the M80 and K550, both which I have heard.
