Multi-Custom In-Ear Monitor Review, Resource, Mfg List & Discussion (Check first post for review links & information) - Page 115

average Joe and Project86 - how did you guys manage to order the lcm-5 already? Seems that they arent available on the website just yet? I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on these. I own the merlins already and was thinking of the heir audio 8.a but was worried that they would be too similar to my merlins. The lcm-5 might be different enough to achieve a different listening experience (and justify another serious capital outlay wink.gif).

Loooking forward to both of your reviews.......

Yeah, it's hard to keep up with everything. I realize that there's no way I'm ever going to cover all the stuff I'd like to cover. So I rely on you and some others that I trust for impressions on stuff that might interest me.

I know what you mean about amp reviews taking longer. For me, DAC reviews are the most difficult of all, because they can be very subtle. Then amps, then headphones/IEMs.

The tough thing is - I like it when we both review something, because then people get a more broad view of it. But then again, if we cover separate stuff, then more stuff gets covered.

I got a feeling I will love the sound of 8A:) always been a fan of warm and lush sound

I had already ordered the LCM-2B from Lear a while back, and at that time they told me of the upcoming LCM-5 model. I told them I was very interested and to let me know when it came out. They contacted me a few weeks back saying it was just about ready, and we went from there.

You may have seen them already, but there are a few other people around here besides me who own both the 8.A and the Merlin. I believe they have posted their impressions. I think the Merlin and 8.A sound different enough, but I can see your point about wanting to go in a completely different direction.

Yes, it's good to have both of us review things as well as reviewing more, too bad it can't be both ways!  I have reviewed a few DACs, but I haven't posted the results in a separate thread, or reviewed the DACs within sources (I updated my source reviews in the 6th post of this thread not too long ago).  And yes, reviews from more than one experience person will definitely help people understand a product.

Yes, warm and lush, but in a different way than the EM3 Pro that I have (more detail and clarity, for example).  I am working on the review now.

I too have been in contact with Lear as I try to keep in contact with all of the manufacturers (I have a lot going on behind the scenes).

@ Lidster, are you looking for something in particular, or just different? The Rooth lineup is quite different, for example.

Joe, I think I'm looking for a more neutral sound this time. Generally I love bass but I feel the Merlins have me more than covered there! I want something that is different to that, I would hate to have two very similar ciems which would inevitably lead to one being better than the other and the poorer not being used, does that make sense? I need a mood changer! I liked the miracle demo but because of poor service from ampcity I won't go back to um. I love the look of that new Lear lcm5 which helps too biggrin.gif what are Lear saying about the sound signature of the lcm5?

Lear described the LCM-5 to me as being really smooth and natural sounding above all else, with no emphasis on big bass, or sharp highs, or bloated mids. But of course that could be taken any number of ways.

The LCM-5 was described to me as having solid bass, natural mids, and sweet smooth highs with a nice balance across the range and the option of studio monitor sound.

Not to discourage you from the LCM-5, especially since I haven't heard it yet, but there are many CIEMs that I think are quite different than the Merlin including the UERM, NT-6, NT-6 pro, SA-43,  and LS6 to name a few.

average_joe,

Have you managed to listen to anything from Stage 93 yet?

Unfortunately, no.  It does seem like they are doing well, however.

I love the red/blue canal idea. Very cool.

I don't have plans to try the BA14pro at the moment. With the LCM-5, Heir 4.A, HE-400, Ultrasone Signature Pro, and Thunderpants all arriving within a couple months of each other, I just don't see how I'd have the time for another one. Not to mention the price. Honestly, I'm more intrigued by the Aurisonics AS-2 and the UM PP6. But maybe someday.

Can you clarify this for me a bit: do you mean literally, the name they use in China is not very good? Or are you saying their reputation is not all that good? If it's the reputation, is it a matter of just not being very well known, or is it more like some people have tried them and not been very impressed?

Just curious. I love getting the inside scoop about perceptions, from a different point of view.

When do you expect the Heir 4A's to arrive?  I have been researching ciem's for the past month and am currently considering them, Alclair Reference, CTM 300 Pro and 1964 Triples.   I've heard some pretty good things about the Heir line-up but nothing specifically about the 4A's so I'm curious to hear your opinion.

Probably late next week. I actually got them in already but the fit was not perfect - there's a long story behind it. Bottom line, I decided to send them back for a refit. That's still 3 out of 4 for Heir Audio with a perfect fit, so I guess I was due.

I'll definitely post more pics and impressions once I receive them. To me, the 4.A seems like an upper-mid tier design with a price tag that's just barely above entry level. Many companies are doing dual or triple driver 2-way designs at this price level. Heir gives us a quad driver, 3-way design, with premium craftsmanship. Good stuff.

The SA-43 certainly has me interested, i also like the look of the SE 5 way reference - my ears should be large enough for them to make it for me too biggrin.gif

Loving your reviews by the way, this is my favourite thread on headfi! Big thanks to both you and project86

Thanks!  Both those CIEMs are great in their own way.  I was listening to the SA-43 last night for 8.A review and was reminded of just how great the overall presentation is of that CIEM (the 8.A has a very different presentation).  Let me know if you have any questions.  And I am glad Project86 is also here to help!

after read your reviews, I'm interested in both SA-43 and SE-5way.  I like it when you mention about the 3D sound stage on both of these.  Could you explain more on this for both pair.  I had a home sound system that I setup long time ago in my home country with all surrond speakers and multi channel amp.  I modified it for music listening and really fall in love with it.  I mostly listen to live concert album.  I'd like to have a ciem that can give the similar sound quality and ambience.  I hope you can suggest some ciem that will give me the sound and ambience similar to live concert listening.
