Whatever you do ,,don't start looking at Bills SR60-Mod thread.evil_smiley.gif I doubt if you will ever need to upgrade them  if you do.

That's the easy part.  It's much easier to argue my point for a pair of headphones under $500 as opposed to a $2,000 pair of speakers.  I don't tell my wife that the headphones sound better than the speakers - she just hears that there's a $1,500 price difference and nods to the new headphones. ;)

If they will fit my 225's then I'll try them, bigger soundstage and more comfort, as long as I dont lose anything else in exchange (bass, airiness)

Thanks for that

Hi,

Sorry about delay in replying. I hadn't seen your post.

Yes, the PS1000 pads do fit. What I found surprising was that they did the opposite of what I expected. I had thought that putting the bigger pads on would take the bass down and the treble up. In fact, I got the opposite!! The bass is strong and weighty (although not deep, but then that may be a characteristic of the sr80i) and the treble doesn't seem as strident. I found the bowls much more middly sounding than the jumbos. They're also a lot more comfortable.

I was never a Grado fan if I'm honest, but this combo has me hooked and I'm now thinking of going back up the ladder again with the 325i. The pads have to be with them for me though.

They're expensive in the UK, but for me, they make the sr80i a really impressive listen and no way harsh.

Hi thanks, I've been pleasantly surprised myself with Grado. When you read so many posts saying this and that, you already have preconceptions about how closed sounding and bright they are with lack of bass etc.. My 225's have a very balanced, airy sound, as balanced as my 650's I would say.. only sharper and lighter sounding. (I'm not saying they are as good as the 650's, only as balanced)

As you say, Grado's are very expensive in the uk, so when I've saved up enough I'm going to try and order the RS1's from America. I think the RS1's are probably the only Grado (without spending over a grand) to hold its own aganst 650's.

Then I'll give the Jumbo's ago!

Cheers

Lugbug, I took the plunge on another pair of 225s (not the "i") the other evening.  They've been re-cabled, have the woody cups and some bass mods to them.  They were posted here in the FS section.  I had the $$ from when I sold my SR225i 'phones on eBay and have thoroughly been enjoying the 325s - but wanted a 2nd set to have as a new toy.  I tried some AKG this past weekend - didn't impress me.  They were good, but not what I was looking for.  I browsed the Audio Technica, Sennheisers and some others - but, decided to keep the money in my wallet.  Well, that was until the woodies showed up for sale here.

Sounds like you've got a winner there! 225's with the wood and recabling, probably sound as good as an RS? I'm still saving for my RS1's shouldn't be too long as I've sold a couple of hp's on ebay.. possibly next pay day, we'll see!

What kind of sound are you getting with the 225 woodies? do they have better acoustic?

LugBug,

The seller lives in Quebec, Canada.  It will take about 4-6 business days in shipping time for them to reach me in the U.S.  I should hopefully have them by the end of next week and be able to offer some impressions - and comparisons to my 325s.  Since the 225s are already broken in, I don't have to wade through that process and my enjoyment should hopefully start the moment I plug them in and hit play.

I'll keep you posted.

Good luck on the "RS" purchase.  You do sound very near in accomplishing that goal.

try the tape mod on the bowl pads. smoother highs and stronger bass was my result.
