Comparison Review: FA003, HD558, K601 - Page 2

Alright, that straightened out my confusion between the K601 vs K701. That was a nice sum up, pretty much a mini review. biggrin.gif

Yeah, I think the HD558/HD598 would definitely be my best bet. In fact, I'm nearly convinced to buy! Problem is, HD558 is $180 and HD598 is $250.

(One of the guys from Sennheiser mentioned yesterday the new HD598's are shipping out with a new, stronger headband material to prevent cracking in future).

One suggestion is to call JR.com. I had called and asked them if they had any sales on the HD-598. They said they could sell me one for $175! They even shipped it overnight to me for an extra $15. I don't think they're worth $250. They are somewhat, but the price is just "OK". JR seems to have some of the best prices on Sennheiser stuff. No, I don't work for them! It seems like only when you call can you get the best price with them.

Quite re-assuring reading this thread. I have the FA-003 , and later this week will receive my 558s from Amazon. I wanted a closed and open headphone setup, and it seems I did choose well.

Need now to find this tape mod everyone is talking about.

Wasn't it you that posted that the k601 should be worth around 300 dollars on another thread? What made you change your opinion? Was that a thread made before this or after?

It's really weird when I read back my old post from 1/2011 about the K601. Doesn't sound like something I would say. Perhaps I meant that the K601 wasn't worth more than $150 since the Q701 is only $235 or so. Heck I don't even know if the Q701 was out in early 2011! $150 seems a bit too low and maybe that was my impression of it when I only had the Asgard.

I have to admit that when I first had the K601 it sounded really bad. Not smooth and kind of harsh sounding. This was when I had only the Asgard. I gave the K601 another chance maybe a year later and it was much better and a little smoother sounding. This was when I had the E9 and Headroom Micro Amp (which is transparent IMO).

I actually like the K601 and think it's better than the K400,  K501 and K702 but not the Q701. It seems to have some weird peaks somewhere that can be annoying.

My impressions have changed before with some headphones. I remember thinking the HD-650 had too much mid-bass and was too dark. This HD-650 doesn't sound like that at all and it's now one of my favorites! Luckily this is rare.

Alright, I think I'll take one for the team and try out the k612

Good! About time someone did that.

I'd still be using my K601 if it wasn't for the Q701. No kidding.

I actually swapped my K601 for a K400 because the K601 wasn't getting any use and the K400 is so much different.

Now I have two K400s biggrin.gif
