I just got my HD598s in the mail a week ago, I use them for gaming (I know not their purpose) but I love everything about them so far!

they should be fantastic for that with the good soundstage... Now, what I want to try is an HD 800 with its unrealistically large soundstage... That would be an awesome experience indeed.

I have never really owned headphones before but i do have the cx 300 ii and to me they sound much louder and better:/ do these headphones require an amp and dac (not familiar with these things as i am new to this stuff). I have used the headphones with my pc, nexus 4 and ipod nano 3rd generation to me these sound really quiet as compared to my cx 300 ii. I am willing to get the omni 5.1 soundcard as it has an 600ohms built in headphones and i am only gonna use it with  my pc. Have you guys experienced any difference between using an amp/dac with the hd 598?

It could be the laid back sound signature too. I noticed they seem "quieter" because of that.

Or the open design, it's like you don't wear headphones at all.

I've seen open cans that blare loudly when amped... My k240's I got get easily twice as loud with my e11. You might just need to amp them.

The HD 598 is fine for gaming. As long as you can drive it, it will work. I always preferred stereo to virtualized surround when it comes to games and headphones.

The only thing amping adds is a more defined bass, but with only 60 ohms you don't really need amping if volume is the only concern, you can get them to uncomfortable levels with an ipod.

yeah, k240's are 55 ohms with 91 db/mW sensitivity... Not loud enough to be used on a school bus without an amp. Plus, maybe he's sound hoarding with his 598's so he needs it loud, or he spent a few years with beats?... Oh, and nexus, a nice thing to get if you ever do decide to use these on the go and still want to use them at home: FiiO E07K, or FiiO E17. Both are dac/amps. The E17 is more powerful, but the E07K will still get pretty darn loud. The E07K is 60$ the last time I checked and will get loud with that 598. Not sure how loud exactly as I don't have them, but pretty loud from looking at specs.

Lol just upgrading, nothing dramatic. Probably to the hd600. It's bitter sweet  though :(

Even after owning the 600s for months, I still can't get over how natural a timbre they have. You won't regret it. I keep my 598s for movies/tv & background music, but when I want to actually listen to music, I only use the 600s.

That's good to know! I love sennheiser :)

Even though I upgraded to 650's, I still keep 598's around for movies/gaming. Great multimedia headphones.
