Edit: Oh, and I bought them from a new seller in Amazon and I bought them for $159 (used-Like New)

I found a pair of fakes in a shop before

exposed headband support structure
light coloured feathery earpads that are very solid and stiff

plastic looks almost translucient and a lot cheaper

no leather on the headband

no wood pattern on the burl

sennheiser logo on the grill too fat and off centre

costs only 1/4 the retail price

Well, here are my headphones, I think they look pretty legit, but I kinda want a second opinion. smily_headphones1.gif

Regarding the Magni and Vali, I have both.

Yes, the Magni is quieter regarding background hiss. But in my opinion, the Vali betters it in every other way. The Vali breathes life into the music. The Magni is not bad, but sounds too controlled and damped down in comparison. Magni sound harmonically homogenous with a very "samey" texture to the sounds. One might even go so far as to call it slightly bland. That's in comparison to the Vali.

The Vali's hiss is very slight with the 598. Not something that enters my consciousness.

After I got my Vali, I never used the 598 with my Magni again. Actually I did once, just once to compare, and then never again. That's how superior the Vali is with these cans, IMO.

So if you want a low noise floor above all else, go for the Magni. If you want music that touches you and moves you, the Vali is the one to get.

Just my two cents. Incidentally, I couldn't believe how good the 598 sounds with the Vali after I paired the two. It's really something special.

And when you're at a point to upgrade, HD600 on the Vali is even more amazing. You won't listen to your 598s again on the Vali once you have the 600s (650s may be just as good, but don't own them and haven't tried them).

I concur, those are real. There may be subtle bass differences between production runs. My second HD598 has 30% more bass than my first pair.

30%? That's not what I would call a "subtle" difference! How far apart were mfg. dates? Is there a known design change that accounts for the difference? Anyone else have this experience?

That's a subjective guess as to giving a specific number. How did you compare them?

I've decided on the hd598 as my open phones to compliment my p7. Can't wait to get them. I think they look awesome too

I didn't! Still curious why the ones that you compared sounded so different from each other. Unless there was a change in materials or design, the same model should have a similar sound signature. I was not aware that Sennheiser had such a variance in quality within the same model production samples.

Look legit to me.

I've got ask.  What kind of cord connector do the fakes have?
