The upcoming Hifiman HE-400i are apparently aiming for HE-500ish sound signature and upgraded comfort, with supposed retail price of 499. I'd wait for reviews to start dropping in and consider them. I'm also planning to buy new hp's next summer and at the moment I'm torn between HD 650 and the HE-400i.

Depending on the sound signature you are looking for, I found the HD650 more relateable to the HD598 than the HE500 was.  Also, I didn't really care for the comfort of the HE500.

I also feel that 650 would be a safe bet as an upgrade, and they are also over 100€ cheaper any way.

There is also the possibility of the new hifimans causing an influx of used he400s and he500s on the FS forums.

In the big scheme of things, you have embarked on a journey that will drain your wallet.100€ cheaper means 100€ more that you will spend later in regret should that be the determining factor in your decision. This hobby is a brutal undertaking.

At the end of the day though, this being the HD598 thread, both will pair well with the headphones, and if you want a super silent, pitch black background, then Vali is probably not what you are looking for.

I don't believe in adding coloration. The HD5x8 series is so easy to drive and can even do well hanging off of most smartphones and mp3 players. An excellent product,

What I understand from these is that you want to make sure you don't introduce too much distortion or warmth into the mix or you'll distort the already warm upper mids and highs quickly.  Also probably a good dac with a transparent amp, or a good dac/amp combo is worthwhile.

I'm thinking that my Music Streamer ii + Magni will do it.  Anyone know if that's a good combo with the 598?  It's a bit too bright for my Grado 80s, which is why I'm looking to uprgrade.  I'm also considering the Beyerdynamic DT 990, which concerns me because of the relatively depressed mids.  Anyone compared these two cans, or have any suggestions given my source and amp?  My problem is that I'm limited in my options because I live in Israel and probably won't be traveling to the US this year.

Does anyone know if there's any fake HD598 out there? because I got some, they came today and they don't leak as much as people have been saying and they actually have bass (I've heard a lot of people complain that they didn't have any bass at all), so I'm just wondering...

Edit: Oh, and I bought them from a new seller in Amazon and I bought them for $159 (used-Like New)

I bought mine from them too, although I wonder if I should have read up on the difference between it and the 558 first. Although I did get the Senn. short cable today, VERY happy about that.

And the cable goes for only $12.95. Now you don't need that huge 3.5mm adapter when plugging into something small.

Plus hooray for portability. My neighborhood is very quiet, so even with these being open I can still enjoy them.

I was searching for a shorter cable with 3.5mm everywhere else and never thought to search with sennheiser. Just ordered one and It's really good buy considering the price.

I ordered mine last Thursday, got a shipping confirmation email Tuesday and it was dropped off at my doorstep earlier today.

Oh yea, I went to frys, but they didn't have any only a bunch of HD558 and they cost $179 lol Anyways, for some reason I didn't think of their website and went ahead and bought them in Amazon. $159 total is still a good deal. so, you think mine are real/genuine? smily_headphones1.gif

If they don't have any bass there is something wrong somewhere.
