Sennheiser HD 598 Impressions Thread - Page 205

Maybe the wire inside is knocking around? the wire that goes from the headband to the right driver in the earcup is pretty long and can potentially swing around.

Nope don't think so, as far as I can tell everything is pretty solid and fixed in place. That's why I'm having trouble putting my finger on what's producing this sound. Again I can only hear it if I make sudden movement with my head (mainly by making a sort of head banging motion), so it's not the end of the world. was just trying to figure out what it was/if it's normal.

Mine do not rattle FWIW. If yours are new/under warranty, and it really bothers you, I would suggest swapping them out for another pair. If it's not a problem...then kick back and enjoy.

Hope that helps. :)

My friend has a pair of 598s, and he says that he feels that there's something weird with his pair, but he's not so sure how he can explain to the warranty guy in order to get a new pair... he just knows there's something wrong. Are there any reasons that will definitely get you a swap for another pair? (it's well burned in)

That makes no sense whatsoever. He just knows something is wrong with it but he can't put his finger on it? I think your friend is wired wrong.

The bass is just fine on these, definitely nowhere near as bad as people made it out to be. This is coming from someone who's been using Monster Miles Davis IEMs (old ones, bassy as hell). Going back to the MD's I find that they just sound obnoxiously bassy now. The HD598's sound phenomenal with liquid DnB.

The differences are very small though that you can't really tell by nit picking, but somehow feeling the overall sound. But both of them are fine as far as im concern.

You know, I got two of these replacement cables before my HD598s even arrived. I wanted to be ready once they got here.

One was a short cable for portable use, one a medium length one for my desktop. I put the medium one on my phones when the arrived and didn't even mess with the stock one.

After listening for a couple of weeks, I just didn't feel the phones were very involving. Something was missing. The sound was plastic. I kept thinking, everyone raves about these phones, but I'm just not enjoying them.

So out of curiosity, I dug out the stock cable and, wow, much more involving.

How to describe it? The eBay cable was cleaner, but stripped away much of that cloud of ambiance that make the better Sennheiser phones sound so musical (I own the 580s, 600s, and a raft of lesser Sennheisers). The replacement eBay cable seemed to present the fundamentals well enough, but it stripped out some of harmonics and ambiance from the music. The sound was kind of plastic and not terribly atmospheric or involving.

So I'm actually sticking with the stock cable.

In favor of the eBay cable, the build and feel of them is great. The connectors look very high quality. They look like they should be much more expensive.

Now, this is my belief, but for vendors like the ones selling thse cables, I feel that sound quality may not be their top priority. It's probably cost of manufacturing, ergo, higher margins.

If so, I believe the signal cable is not chosen for sound, but for cost. It's possible the make of signal cable could change from batch to batch, depending on whatever is least expensive when supplies are purchased. Which would throw even more variability into the sonic character from batch to batch.

That's just a conjecture, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true.

Well, I'm set with the stock cable until another sonically proven cable surfaces. It's crazy, but I've been enjoying the HD598s more in the last hour since I've put the stock cable back on than I have in the weeks listening to them with the replacement eBay cable.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

It was this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261255113290?var=560215640802&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Again, great looking and feeling cable. It really didn't perform sound wise for me, however.

That hits the nail on the head.

The short cable i'm gonna keep it for my HD202 for portable use.

Would that wire be what I might be hearing in the left earcup? If so, is that fairly normal? I only notice it if I make sudden movements with my head, it sounds like a faint clicking sound as if something is moving around a little bit.

I went to his place last night and I figured it out. Probably loose wires since whenever he makes a slight movement (e.g. head turning) the music suddenly goes weak and distorts and then goes back to normal. Should he fix it at home by screwing the thing or take it to Senn?

Oh shoot this is going to turn into a "better cable, better sound" thread.

Just to clarify, I have the stock and a short cable from ebay, no sonic difference whatsoever.

We don't want people going out and buying 100 dollar cables for 200 dollar headphones do we?

598 sound fantastic with the Vali. No worries, it's definitely a good match.

Well everyone's can express their opinion on it. I originally thought there was no difference too. And no we are not talking about better $100 cables. We are just saying that the stock included cable made by sennheiser sounds more pleasing to us than an affordable portable alterntive aftermarket cable made by a third party manufacturer.

I bought a pair of these today at the Black Friday discounted price (~$187), based on the reviews in this thread. Seems like they're really popular so I decided that I had to check them out for myself.
