Come on! Drums sound like crap at 128

Depends on the recording.

I just did a quick A/B of "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" by The Police - first streaming from Pandora at 128 kbps and then from my SACD. Both through my Benchmark DAC1 to my Sennheiser HD800's.

Yes, there is a difference between the two, but it is subtle. Terms like "terrible" and "crap" are both large overstatements.

Hope you see this. I know this post is old but I just purchased the HD598's and have a Little Dot MKIII do you forsee any issue's with powering these phones with this tube amp??

Your little dot will be more than enough to power the 598's. The 598's are very efficient headphones and an amp isn't necessarily even required, but their sound does benefit some from amping.

I'd say drums are the only thing to lose a noticeable amount of power with low bitrates, but they don't lose quality like a buzzing sound or hissing.

Also, I found that I have a 80 kbps mp3, and yet that one come from itunes! XD Me and my before audiophile days.

Thanks, my bad, I hit reply instead of quote on a post I was reading but thanks for the fast reply. It was saying that a tube amp might not be the best with this phone. I am new to headphones and am moving up from the Superlux HD668b, at least I hope this will be a move up the ladder. The Superlux's sound awesome in my setup but I got the upgrade bug...

On the positive side, you probably saved at least 100 kilobytes of memory on your hard drive...biggrin.gif

I guess I should bring up another thing: I didn't like the highly praised M50s. The mids were just too recessed for my tastes, and so they sounded horrible with EDM to me. Would the 598s be better for that, or am I still going for the Q701s?

The M50 is not smooth sounding while the HD598 is the exact opposite.
Not heard the Q701, is it similar to the K701 in signature? Cause i felt the K701 is good but at the same price as a HD650..... (it is a little better than the HD598, bit if its the same price as the HD650 i would take the senns over it anyday.)

Yes, the Q701s are said to be a little warmer then the K701s, most people agree the Q701 is an improvement. It technically has the same driver. The Q701s can be bought right now (in the lime green edition) for $230, so nowhere near the 650s.

Edit: That term. Smooth. Its what makes me keep coming back to the 598s. I've always loved the idea of a headphone being "smooth." I have yet to hear anyone (at least from my horrid memory) calling the Q701s smooth...

Edit2: Of course, using the search function with Q701 and smooth pulls up a bazillion results XD

Were these ever revised to prevent the plastic housing from cracking?

Yes, they fixed that sometime last year I believe.
