No, the 598 isn't necessarily a better listening experience than the 600, you're right.

I'd say overall, the value proposition of the 600 is better than that of the 598, at least to my ears. Price wise, I think both phones fall correctly in Sennheiser's lineup.

They are both very good, and it's really critical that you get a good match with whatever phones, amp, and source.

They both can sound great, but only if you get good synergy in your system. Otherwise, they can tend to gravitate to "very good, but nothing special."

I do enjoy the 600, just that I like the HE-500 more. 598 is sufficiently different that I use those every now and then, but usually in another semi-portable setup.

I'd also say that if someone can't afford any of these, a pair of HD558's might work well for them until they can move it on up. I love my HD600's and HE-500's but I also have a pair of black foam modded HD558's that I take to the office. The HD558's don't leak that much and doesn't disturb others around me. Even though I've got plenty of room around me, IMO they wouldn't disturb anyone that might otherwise be close-by.

Any thoughts of amping these, specifically? I haven't found much on the forums about amping these besides the FiiO lineup, Schiit Magni and the Bravo Audio Ocean. Are there any other good desktop/portable amps for these phones for around $100?

These are easy to amp, I find they work well right off my cellphone, Samsung Galaxy S3 (US).

If you want t get an amp, I'd stay away from cheap one tube amps. I don't have a Magni but it's a steal at $99, great specs, I have an Asgard 2 which is very good but over your budget, I think the Magni will be far more than enough. If you want a portable, consider the Fiio E12, I have one and it is nice, it can drive my HE500 and HD600's and do it well.

I'm very happy using the USB powered HRT microStreamer though I haven't really compared it with much. Comes in at $189. I doubt it's any better than the Modi/Magni but it is portable.

I listened to my HD598s through both Magni and Vali (both through Modi and Gungnir) at a recent meetup, and both work well.  I personally prefer Vali, and it would be my recommendation at the this price point.

I own a Vali. I bought it for fun as I have other amps. It sounds good, however, be forewarned.

It has background noise, regardless of the volume control's position. If you put sensitive cans or IEM's on this amp, you will hear it during quite passages.

It rings. When you power up, plug in a jack, touch the case or turn the volume control with some vigor. This doesn't bother me too much, but some people may not be happy about this. YMMV.

Does the Magni avoid the noise by not having tubes? If so, that's the one I'll go for

It's very quiet, the SNR is better than 100 dB. SS is quieter than tubes, unless the designer was asleep at the wheel.

My experience with microphonics on Vali as been negligible.  It rings when you plug in, and if you tab the volume knob intentionally.  But it is true it is microphonic and is noiser than a SS amp though both are not issues IMO.  I still think Vali sounds better than Magni, but it is important to know what you are getting into.

Yeah, Magni is pretty much silent.

Yeah, Magni is pretty much silent.

The distortion levels of the Vali are reaching to where I can hear it. It's still a nice sounding amp and the harmonic distortion is not big on odd order. I have an Asgard 2 and the distortion is not to be heard, should be the same for the Magni.

I agree, Asgard 2 and Magni have no distortion and noise, as I would expect.  And while, Vali has higher noise and may be audible, I find that any distortion or coloration it may produce adds to the character and sound.  I guess that would make it euphonic?  I think, like everything, its a preference thing, and what you are willing to compromise.

At the end of the day though, this being the HD598 thread, both will pair well with the headphones, and if you want a super silent, pitch black background, then Vali is probably not what you are looking for.

Can anyone quickly compare the 598 to the hifi man 400s...I have the 598s but I'm getting the itch to try the 400s

I don't believe in adding coloration. The HD5x8 series is so easy to drive and can even do well hanging off of most smartphones and mp3 players. An excellent product,

Try the HE-500's if you can spare the extra cash. These are a definite step up but require amplification. Oh, the bass and everything is crystal clear.
