Sennheiser HD 598 Impressions Thread

Thanks for the kind words all. I am not well versed in headphones at all, so I was a bit concerned that I would get some "strange looks" for posting an off the wall review that flies in the face of conventional wisdom. Good to know, that my experience with these is similar to the general consensus.

One other thing to note, that I forgot during my write up, is the supplied cable. I have nothing negative to say about it at all, and (I cannot stress this enough) LOVE the generous length. It allows me to comfortably move around the room, and sit back from the t.v., to watch movies comfortably with these on.

I am undecided about the twist to lock end however. While it seems like a great idea to avoid accidentally pulling the cable out, I also worry about accidentally stepping on it, or otherwise jerking it way too hard, and causing breakage. I am hoping this is a good design, but only time will tell on that.

The thickness and pliability of the cable seem to be quite good as well. Even with the length of the cable, I haven't experienced any issues with tangling. Kudo's to Sennheiser on that.

Having said all that, I am a bit surprised that Senn did not include an additional shorter cable for portable/on the go use. Sure, open back 'phones aren't generally considered to be portable phones, but the 598s seems to be driven decently well with an ipod, so you would think that Senn would want to try to take advantage of that segment of the market as well. Especially in this day and age, where personal/portable audio players are king.

Yeah the stock cable is ridiculously too long to use portably.. but there are cables on eBay made specifically with that twist/lock jack.. me and a couple others on this thread have used them and are extremely happy with them.. (cosmetically they look amazing too)

You can see them if you click the gallery view to the top right of this forum. Here's a link

Or you can braid the cable yourself for a unique solution.  I got my better half to do this and posted this way back in the thread -

Thanks for the info.

I went back and looked at the pics of these cables in this thread. The user pictures of those cables are simply beautiful IMO. Very nice looking, and match the 598 very well. However, the pics in the link you provided show the cable as having a darker/black look. Are all of these that same burgundy/brownish color?

Also, what about shipping time for these. Does it take as long as the e-bay ad suggests? Are these guys legit? I have never ordered anything from outside the USA, so I get a bit nervous about it...

Thanks for the info.

I didn't catch a view of that before.. that looks really well done! Kudos to the better half indeed!

It took me exactly 8 business days to get my cable in from China...
This is the one I got (1.8m version)

The picture on eBay isn't as conveying as it is in person.. I'll see if I can get better lighted pictures for you.. it's really beautifully done.. and well worth the <$20.. and it fixes the need to use the cans with portable devices... since you can choose your cable length.

For $20 I think it is a no brainer to try the cable and use the 598 as a portable phone. But, and this is not to diss the phones, I find that unless you work in your own quiet space at the office, all those lovely details in the music just get lost. More so when walking or riding public transport. And heaven forbid you live in a windy city like mine...lol :)

The Sr80s work better as the sound is more in your head and upfront, but still not ideal.

Bang for the buck portable would be something like te M80. Decent isolation, no amplification needed to drive to decent levels. Very good bass as well.

But if you do have that little corner at work where you can have a bit of quiet, the 598s would be excellent.

ah man.. I really really tried my damndest to get a pair of the M80s when they were on sale for $40 at the shack. But apparently everyone in the southeastern half of the US caught wind of it.. cuz I drew blanks at about 10 local stores.. and everywhere else.

About the seller http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Replacement-Audio-upgrade-Cable-For-Sennheiser-HD598-HD558-HD518-Headphone-/261255113290?pt=US_MP3_Player_Cables_Adapters&var=&hash=item3cd404aa4a,
I placed my order & not 2 seconds after I hit enter, I realized that I had ordered the wrong length cable. I emailed the seller & got a very cordial response within 5 minutes. They assured me that everything on my order would be adjusted, no problem. They went on to say that they are very serious about providing a good product & good customer experience. It was very assuring to communicate back & forth, as I have always been a bit uncertain about ordering from China & although I have never been burned, I still feel like it is a bit of a gamble.
Cheers,
kev

They were available for $40!@&%^#&@%& lol!

I did get mine at a discount, but not that deep a discount. Oh well. I don't feel bad for what I paid, and I love them dearly.

The 598 is the same. Even without the deep discount, I feel the price is justified. Of course a good discount will only enhance the desirability.

Is it even possible to use the 598s publicly without annoying everybody around you? Considering the open design.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not shy, but given the looks and the sound leakage, I wouldn't want to submit myself to that kind of public attention!

It's okay unless you blast your music very loud in a very quiet environment. (eg library)
