I auditioned the SRH-1840 straight out of the box, and was unsatisfied with the sound, so I decided to give them a period of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite differences...
I didn't think of TEAC when I began searching for a dedicated CD player. My initial short list included Denon, Cambridge, Marantz, Onkyo. The Teac intrigued me, so I went for it. It is very...
Sennheiser HD-598s are the most comfortable headphones I've had the opportunity to use. I recommend these wholeheartedly for any first-time hi-fi buyer because of their excellent soundstage and...
I just received my SigPros (bought from a fellow head-fi'er), and now have several hours with them. They are great headphones. Agree with most of what everyone's saying about them. These...
A friend of mine is thinking out getting 2 sets of av40s for front and back speakers, but how would he get a sub abd center speaker for proper 5.1? Can you simply split the channel sub/center channel?
Take note though, if he's not using a receiver or a packaged set of speakers with a central volume control, after he sets the balance on each active speaker, his central volume control will be digital/software, ie, the master on the OS or media player or whatever he's playing. This isn't a big problem but he could be the type to find this inconvenient if not outright annoying.

As long as it'll work as a ghetto 5.1, it'll be fine.
I have done a setup like this before. I used a 3.5mm to L/R RCA adapter for the center and left the LFE unconnected. I found out however that when I was useing my creative card in 5.1 configuration that overall the systems frequency response was cut under 150hz and was sent out the LFE which was not connected to anything. I couldn't find a way to send the full range to all channels with the creative drivers.
-Foobar however has a dsp that allows 4.0 stereo which was great with this setup, intense immersion when listening to music this way.
