Potentially silly speaker question.

A friend of mine is thinking out getting 2 sets of av40s for front and back speakers, but how would he get a sub abd center speaker for proper 5.1? Can you simply split the channel sub/center channel?

I'm certainly no expert in this field but I should imagine if he's got the right Amp it shouldn't be a problem...

Hope someone else can give you better tips mate :)

you will need a receiver designed for active speakers.

What's your source? Amp? Soundcard? ipod?

Center/sub is often combined in one jack on soundcards, so a sub and center av40 connected simultaneously, most likely.

It'll be  connected  via a Creative x-fi something something Fatal1ty. So if so that'll work?

Take note though, if he's not using a receiver or a packaged set of speakers with a central volume control, after he sets the balance on each active speaker, his central volume control will be digital/software, ie, the master on the OS or media player or whatever he's playing. This isn't a big problem but he could be the type to find this inconvenient if not outright annoying.

As long as it'll work as a ghetto 5.1, it'll be fine.

I have done a setup like this before. I used a 3.5mm to L/R RCA adapter for the center and left the LFE unconnected. I found out however that when I was useing my creative card in 5.1 configuration that overall the systems frequency response was cut under 150hz and was sent out the LFE which was not connected to anything. I couldn't find a way to send the full range to all channels with the creative drivers.

-Foobar however has a dsp that allows 4.0 stereo which was great with this setup, intense immersion when listening to music this way.

Now I'm curious, how well does games work with 4.0? Is there any kind of compatibility problems (given 5.1 is the most common setup)?

Games sounded great, playing the RIFT beta everything sounded great, rear channels came in nice and loud to hear mobs creeping up from behind.
