Audio Technica ATH-M50 cable kink spring thingy...

I have a pair of ATH-M50's, and I love them. I bought them based on what I heard here a few months ago, and I havn't had any issues.

I let my friend borrow them yesterday for a bit, we were in the same room the entire time, but when she gave them back, the little spring that is on the headphone jack was out of it's little hole, and it can slide freely up the cable., she must have pulled the cable out by the spring.

I cannot seem to get it to fit back into this little hole.....

are there any tips on how to do this? The only way I can think of it would be to do it when the cable is not going through the jack, and hold the spring wound up through the other side, so the diameter is smaller, then let go and let it spring back and fill up the space.

Is the spring doomed to either slide up and down the cable for all of eternity, or be cut off because I can't stand it anymore?

and one smaller question: When I walk around in the cold with these, the left ear cup squeaks at one of its hinge points, is there any form of lubrication that is suggested?

thanks you guys, you are a ton of help!

I had this very same problem yesterday and I found a really useful post on how to fix it.

Take your fingernail and stick it in the last coil and pull the rest of the spring away from that coil. Once you've got some distance between the coil and the rest of the spring, push it down into the jack and twist to let it get wedged under there. Keep twisting and the spring will continue to go further under the jack.

I'm not sure if I've described it effectively but it worked for me. I'll see if I can dig up that post, too.

edit: here's the post I found that really helped.

I can't seem to get that to work. I have very short fingernails, so it is hard to get this to work right... I might have to have someone else help me, but I have class right now, I will have to deal with this later.

I still can't seem to fix this...

I might just end up leaving it and hoping the cable doesn't get sliced open by the sharp edge where the spring was

Same thing happened to me, I just took it off. I may put some shrink tubing or electrical tape on there some time but I'm confident that it'll stay together, the M50's cable is pretty sturdy

Silicone grease you can find it in the plumbing section of hardware  stores (ask someone they'll point you in the right direction) comes in small white tubs. COMPLETELY PLASTIC SAFE. I use it on my HD650's

This happened to me, and I did what the first poster said, but I used a toothpick to push it back in

I just fixed mine a minute ago.

Like torifile said, you have to kinda bend the first coil out so that it is separate from the other coils.

Then you stick the first coil into the hole, and start twisting, all while your fingernail is between the first and 2nd coil.

if you twist, it goes in

my friend did the EXACT same thing with mine, which ive had for over a year without problems. ugg...why would you ever pull from the spring.

Hey guys, none of these worked for me sadly so after half an hour of fiddling, I'm posting my method.

I took a rotring lead pen and used its syringe like tip to push the coil inside only a small amout a time. Start from the first coil and push it right into the connector in like 70 degrees of angle. Aye

Did it work?

Had the same experience half a year ago; fixed by trimming away a turn or two of the spring near the connector end with a clipper, screwing in as much of the spring into the connector as possible, then pushing down the spring into the connector/cable space 1/5-of-a-turn at a time with a needle held parallel to the turns of the spring (perpendicular to the length of the cable). Quite easy to do once you get a hang of the needle.
