Beyer DT990/600 vs Ultrasone Pro 900 vs ATH-M50

So I've been looking at these 3 headphones, the Beyerdynamic DT900/600ohm, Ultrasone Pro 900, and the Audio Technica ATH-M50. They all seem kind of similar regarding their bass.

I want a headphone with bass as authority, but it has to be quality bass, not muddy bass.

To be honest, I want to get all 3 of them because they do have their differences, but my wallet might kill me in my sleep. :(

So I might just get 2 of these headphones with the biggest differences because I want variety, don't want them to be too similar.

I would like some suggestions on how similar these 3 cans are and which 2 have the most difference between them.

If they are all very different I might have to get all 3...........deadhorse.gif

Thanks for any suggestions!

I think you should just get all 3 and decide for yourself. If you like 2 over 1 then return that one

The bass between the DT990 and M50 are VERY different. The 990 has quick, punchy, quality bass. The M50 is slower, thumpier, and boomier. Both have pros and cons. I prefer ther quick bass the 990s had as it was never obtrusive. The treble is definitely love/hate. It is very sharp.

As serious cans go, I'd try out the 990 and Pro 900. I love the M50, but they aren't in the same league.

I haven't heard the 600 ohm version of the 990... but did own the 250 ohm version until about a week ago. I sold them in favour of the Ultrasone 900's

I find the Ultrasone's better in every way than the Beyers.

In reference to the bass... I find that the Ultrasones have much more slam and kick than the Beyer's without sounding muddy or thumpy at all.

I second this. I never liked the M50s bass. I like that punch delivery

In case it helps narrow things down... the two latter are closed if isolation/leakage is a factor.

The PRO 900 definitely trumps my DT 880 easily... I honestly think the DT 990 would put up one heck of a fight but technically speaking the PRO 900's are a tier above the 990's.

The soundstage is so good on the PRO 900 that it is very easy for me to forget that I am listening to a closed-back headphone.

For the price of all 3 though, you may as well just get the D7000 and call it a day, though I'm sure your intent is to return the two you don't like. tongue_smile.gif

For less than $600, the D7000 should be a priority for EVERYONE, lol. I still can't believe they have been selling for that price. They will wow practically anyone.

BTW, the D7000 has bass similar to the M50, but it sounds separated from the detail of everything else, so its unobtrusive. Still trying to figure out how such subterranean bass could be so powerful and not trample on everything else.

I'd still like to try the Pro 900...badly.

From what I've read between the two it's basically a lesser version of your D7000's for nearly half the price. Puts up one hell of a fight but falls short, but considering value they're extremely good.

Back to the OP; since the DT 990's seem to have jumped back up to the $300 mark, I'd say go with the PRO 900's every time. They can be had for $320 via buyauthorized on eBay (make an offer), and while I would usually never recommend eBay as a means to purchase headphones, just about everyone from the PRO 900 appreciation thread, myself included, has purchased from buyauthorized and can confirm its is a legit and unused headphone and cannot be found for cheaper on the internet.

Wow! That was a lot of replies in a short time. Well I looked at the D7000 and it's just too much for me lol. I actually want to keep 2 out of the 3 headphones, and I want those 2 to have the greatest difference so I have variety. It seems like the Pro 900 is definitely on the list, but I was just looking at the HFI-780 from Ultrasone as well, how does that compare to everything else?

Yeah, I'd only for Beyers if they are in the $225 area.

I don't know why you'd wanna keep two headphones that cater to the same genres... I'd personally just take the best I can afford instead of two lesser options.

Well, considering the PRO 900 is basically the flagship non-edition Ultrasone headphone, the HFI 780 seems redundant and will only disappoint next to the PRO 900. Given the price difference I couldn't recommend them. If you're planning to keep 2, I would watch the 990's and wait for them to drop at least back down to the $250 mark, which they have been at for the longest time until recently. The 250 Ohm even went down to $180ish for a while; so given those prices I wouldn't pay $300 for Beyers.

But yeah, as MLE has advised me many-a-time in the past, if you're going to buy 2, buy two with completely different sound signatures altogether.

Or at least one open and one closed IF you don't already own headphones, which OP definitely does.

One day, one day I will try the Pro 900. I won't rest until its done. Same as the HD650, a pair of Grados (probably MS1i or SR225I), and D2000. I'm a sucker for trying out cheaper stuff even if I own something better.

Cool thanks. I was also reading about the Kees Mod on the PRO 900. Is it a mod that's a must? I really don't like to open up headphones, but if it makes a world of difference I'd do it. You basically put electric tape to cover up the holes?

It's supposed to make the PRO 900's more balanced.

Personally, as a BIG fan of neutral sound, my PRO 900's are stock, and unmodded if that says anything.

As much as I love the detail and balance of my DT 880's, the PRO 900's sparkly highs and authoritative, yet uninvasive bass is just too good. I wouldn't want to mess with it.
