Hi all! This is my first post here on Head-Fi.
Setup:
- Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)
- pulseaudio disabled
- digital out bypasses dmix directly to hardware (XBMC)
- CMI8768 based Montego card 16/96
- Optical out to Cambridge DacMagic
Conundrum:
Given that the DacMagic upsamples all incoming audio streams to 24/192 would I gain any increase in audio quality from upgrading to a card that supports 24/96 SPDIF output? If I currently play any 24bit encoded content it gets down converted to 16bit before being sent out SPDIF to the Dacmagic using my current card. I assume that this down conversion in software and/or hardware isn't optimal, so would adding a card with native hardware support (and linux driver support) for 24bit audio be beneficial?
If so, what cards are recommended with full Linux (ALSA) support? I've looked into the Xonar DS and it appears to have full support under ALSA. What else is out there?
I don't actually use any other i/o ports on the sound card I have now, just need SPDIF. So how bout those USB --> SPDIF converters? Are there any well-regarded inexpensive brands/models out there with 24/96 support?
I'm looking to get optimal audio quality out of my pc as I finally get away from CD's and continue ripping my collection to lossless FLAC. Head-Fi is a great resource, thanks to all for your contributions!
Thanks!
