I remember when I got my first pair of Grados, a humble set of SR-80i cans. I had them in my backpack and took them back and forth from school and home, and along the way would have many friends asking to tune into them. In contrast of their inexpensive buds and budget headsets, they were floored. They thought I was crazy for paying $100 (which is pretty inexpensive all things considered) on a set of cans, but now to them it was justified.
About two weeks later, I went to one of these friend's houses to help work on his computer and he opened his dresser and pulled out several boxes while exclaiming, "I got new headphones, and you have got to listen to them!" As he turned around in his hands were a pair of Beat Studios and buds. "Oh lord..." is exactly what ran through my my mind. "Not these stupid things again." The problem here is that in my case, I would hate to attack someone for what they love, let alone give cause for them to question their recent investment. So I played along with a smile talking saying ambiguous statements like, "Oh these are quite unique." It was all fine until he started making attacks at my Grado cans going on about how clear his were in comparison, going on about how "they say you can hear things you have never heard before in the music" as he was pulling up 128kbs mp3 files playing out of a computer headphone jack for me to "hear" these new found aspects of his music. It was a pretty terrible experience, little does he know the musical bliss of k701s paired with a good amp and a clear hi-fi source (flac and vinyl baby).
Within the same week, another friend went out and bought a pair of Beat buds because of the realization that spending money on good headphones is okay. It was almost the same case as the above mentioned.
The worse part is that the attacks that come from those who own Beats. But to be fair, we often bash them, Bose and Skullcandy quite heavily on this forum. If it makes them happy, it makes them happy, even if it is from their ignorance of possibly better cans out there to meet their needs. Regardless, I think it is safe to say that anyone who comes up to you and inquires why you're listening to "those headphones" and suggests a pair of Beats as Studios sit around their neck is grossly pompous and extremely rude. Still, as I have said, we cannot act the same or we become part of the same culture.
So to those arrogant Beat owners out there, or any headphone fanboy for that matter:
Get over yourselves. Seriously.
