Sennheiser HD 650 Grilles

Thread Starter

Okay,

So I've got a pair of HD 600 headphones that go with me pretty much everywhere, in my backpack or bag.  The grilles, as has happened to others, are dented and worn now as a result - I do occasionally take them out and push them back, but that doesn't get it back to 100% - more like 70%.  And the paint is still worn off anyway.

Yeah, yeah, you say I should treat them better... Well, they're my transportable rig and the abuse they see in my bags (and the occasional drop from my desk) is all well within the headphones' physical tolerances.  Except the grills.

Now, I've heard before that the HD 650 grilles are similar but thicker, and don't dent and ding very easily.  Is this true?

Also, knowing that there was a change in the screen in front of the driver; was there a change in the grilles as well?  I haven't seen the HD 650 in person (no store I've been to has had it), so I can't really say what they look like in person - but photos online seem to show both silver and black grilles - is it just the lighting in the photo, or is there a difference?

Also, I see that the plastic fitting ring for them is glossier than the HD 600 grill, at least in the photos that show a more silvery ring.  On the other hand, it possibly looks more matte in the blackish photos.  Again, the lighting makes it difficult to tell.  I know I thought the finish of the HD 600 looked a bit gaudy in photos, but in person it looks great.

The reason I bring it up is I'm trying to find the best/right grilles to get.  I'm in Sweden, where Sennheiser parts are expensive to get direct or from dealers.

These have me wondering:

They're claimed to be HD 650 grilles, but look just like HD 600 grilles with matte black plastic surround pieces.

Here's the example photos for you.

All hd650 grills are the same. The differences you're seeing are due to the lighting in the studio, when the photographs were taken.

On the other hand the screens have been changed by Sennheiser at some point (3-4 years ago) from black to silver. But it has nothing to do with the grills, but with the driver assembly.

In terms of sound quality - I have noticed no difference whatsoever between HD580, HD600 and HD650 grills in whatever configuration I've tried. Other people claim to hear differences between them ... YMMV.

In terms of esthetics the HD650 grills are indeed prettiest and seem the sturdiest.

No, what they changed has to do with the drivers and not the grills. The HD 650 grills seem pretty sturdy, I accidently bent them in once and they bent back.

And that contradicts my original statement, how ?!
