Looking for a SACD/cd Player

Thread Starter

I am lusting after the Arcam FMJ CD-37 but it is way out of my price range.

I have checked most other major brands and there doesn't seem to be much else out there. I really like warmth and punch and lack of digital-ness.

Basically it is down to specialty products or ones that I don't know about. So what does everyone have for me?

SACD/cd capability - warm with some excitement.

Thanks,

Sam

So what's your budget?

It's more neutral than warm, but I've been extremely pleased with a Marantz SA8001 for a few years now. I hear no flaws and Stereophile's measurements show it to be as good as pretty much anything out there. My plans are to keep it until it drops dead.

You should be able to find one well under your budget. I haven't been tracking prices, but recall seeing a nice one listed at $400.

Spend your savings on more SACDs. smily_headphones1.gif

Does the Marantz handle cd's well? Also, I have not tried one but aren't they very smooth and sorta "unexciting"

I can deal with the neutral side of things - (though analytical is bad) - smooth and exciting maybe? I am running it with a 300b set amp that is very transparent so I guess "more warmth" could potentially be negative.

Thanks,

sam

Consider the Sony DVP-S9000ES. It's now obsolete for DVD playback, but still state-of-art for SACD, as well as CD. You can get one off E-Bay for a few hundred bucks.

100$ Sony BDP-S370 if you stick to stereo. for SACD as good as the Oppo BD83se. For CD I have hard time differentiate it from my Ref9 while on my tube amp. On my GHP a bit to much crap goes through it for CD though but SACD is pure bliss.

Almost free to try and it´s very competent as a bluray player as well.

I would like to recommend the modest Harman Kardon DVD 48 player - it is a universal player (SACD, DVD Audio, etc.) that sells for around $100 (re-furbished) in auctions directly from HK on Ebay.  They sell a lot of model 37s and 47s...so you have to watch Ebay for a DVD 48 auction (vs Buy It Now)

I have owned one for about a year - the redbook playback is stunning and the SACD performance is quite good.  The 47 sells for around $70 in auctions and also covers SACD but I have no experience with it - it probably uses the same DAC, etc.

The Marantz CD700x-series and higher up and Denon's new higher end series are interesting too. I was eyeing Rotel too.

I am on the look out for a decent CD-player with a reliable transport and since all the marketing BS and lack of information is bugging me I dropped the SACD option and will audition an older Yamaha (CD only with coaxial out!). Sony's 800 CD and SACD player also seemed interesting but I skipped it.

If the CDX593 is not good enough an Onkyo is next on the list.

Good luck...

P.S. I just had to google that HK.
