Ortofon e-q5 vs RE262... which one did you keep and why? - Page 5

RE262 are fine out of Clip+. There's only one reason I used my T3 with them - they drain battery like no other. But they are much, much more efficient than than the equal impedance RE1. A bit of refinement / tightness is what I get with T3. I am assuming it should scale up with better sources / amps, though I don't have any to try with.

Same reason I use the T3 with my J3. And might I say, excellent review of the re262 esanthosh! I posted the link a couple of posts ago

Thanks for that. I was not that confident about posting that on head-fi because of my slightly limited audio vocabulary. I am still not at a level where I can express everything that I hear in a clear, descriptive manner. I am still learning something new every day by reading. But, I am trying. Hopefully, I should start posting in head-fi too sometime :)

I don't know about you daanish, but I personally couldn't listen to RE262 and e-Q5 with FA-003 around. FA-003 makes both sound very mediocre. In particular, when comparing e-Q5 with FA-003, I found the e-Q5 lacking detail, finesse and soundstage compared to FA-003 big time. Switching from FA-003 to e-Q5 made the latter sound way too agressive and very boxy. Comparing FA-003 with RE262 made the latter sound lifeless by comparison - FA-003 produces way more treble detail (detail, not energy), is more tonally accurate and has a much, much better instrument separation.

What's your opinion on FA-003 vs. e-Q5 and RE262? FA-003 sure didn't destroy the SM3 when I AB'ed them. In fact, SM3 was better than FA-003 in many aspects and put up a very good fight against it. Same with DBA-02 - definitely not lacking much compared to FA-003. Thus, I don't think it is that FA-003 is so great, but that the e-Q5 and RE262 are just mediocre IEMs. Perhaps, I just don't like their sound signature, but that doesn't make much sense to me because SM3 sounded even warmer and yet I still liked it very much it - despite being very warm and thick, it had fantastic separation and refinement, unlike RE262 and e-Q5 IMO. Also, FA-003 is quite neutral and honest IMO.

erm i cannot say i agree with you there

I have to agree with you, though not quite as emphatically smile.gif I definitely enjoy the FA-003 the most, its has all the clarity, separation, rich mids that the e-q5 and the re262 have + it has the big stage (height, width and depth) advantage that full sized cans generally have over IEMs. I am actually starting to question whether I need the re262 or the e-q5 at all. Regarding the DBA, it's close, but the FA-003 has the roundness of note that is more appealing to me over the DBA which is much more aggressive in its  presentation. I wouldn't call the e-q5 or the re262 mediocre, rather marvel at the value gold mine that is the FA-003biggrin.gif You are very correct about the tonal accuracy and presentation as well, phenomenal really. I thought the e-q5 was master of that but the FA-003 comfortable rivals it.

I think that, coupled with the fact that I reach for the re262 more for portable use and sleeping, experience less sibilance (or upper mid spike)... the e-q5 is probably going to have to go up for sale. I'm going to wait till I get my hands on the FX700 though, then make a final decision.
