new ipod query

i seem to have lost my ipod 5.5 g 80 gig. i am considering doing one of two things and would like some advice...

first, i have tinnitus, and cannot hear above 12 khz, thanks to years of too loud listening levels...

i can however tell the difference between 128 kb and 320 kb aac. so this is what i always use... lossless just takes up more space and i get no benefit...

my home reciever is the pioneer elite sc27, and aac 320 sounded good to me coming out of the bottom plug on the ipod through the reciever...

so here's my question. i understand from many of you that the sound quality of the new 160gig gen 7 ipod classic isn't as good as the 5.5. i assume this ONLY applies to sound coming from the headphone jack, am i correct? the bottom line out would still sound the same plugged into my reciever or my car stereo?

if i am correct i'll buy the new one for it's massive storage. if i am wrong i'm going to try and find an old 5.5...

thanks...

Both the HP and line out connections will sound different between the 5 G and 6/7 G.  The 5G used a Wolfson audio chip and the newer use a Cirrus Logic.

so the ipod still does the job of dac-ing the files even using the bottom plug? i thought maybe the bits went to my reciever and were then decoded...

Yes.

There are devices that will take the digital stream from the iPod but they're too costly IMO...better to just use your PC and use USB or optical if that's an option.

(edit) I just read your profile. "I draw cartoons for a living" <---awesome!  beyersmile.png
