new computer sound card. I am a noob

Thread Starter

I have been reading this forum for a few weeks now and have been looking into getting a sound card for my computer.  Currently I am only using the onboard card and from everything that I have read it sounds like the asus essence is hard to beat.

my question is how well will it do surround sound compared to my onboard card?  I know I will have to use the digital output and will be limited to the quality of my dac, which in my case isn't very good as I have a logitech z-5500.

I would say that I would be using 50/50 headphones, surround sound, so it is somewhat important that the essence shows an improvement for 5.1

For the headphones I was thinking of getting a pair of ATH-AD700, unless hd558 or something else would work better?

as I said I am new to this so any help is appreciated

I'd recommend T50RP for headphones.  Above and beyond those AT's or Senns if you do not mind doing a little modding.
