Newbie needs some help.

I just got 2 sets of M-Audio speakers for Free.  AV-40's -   http://m-audio.com/products/en_us/MAudioAV40.html

                                                                BX8a's -  http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/StudiophileBX8aDeluxe.html

I would like to hook them up to my soon to be new computer.  I was not planning on getting a Sound Card but if I have to I will.  I am gonna be using an ASUS M4A89TD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890FX motherboard with Realtek ALC892 Audio Chipset/8 Channels.

So I'm wondering what would be the best way to hook these up to my computer? Is it even possible?

Could I add a Subwoofer to either of these?  Do I need to add a sub to either of these?

And any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

These are powered monitors so they can be connected directly to the line out of the on-board sound device.  That would be a "no frills / no cost" solution (except for the interconnects).  My personal preference is to do all D/A conversion outside of the computer, and a pre-amp might be a good thing to have as well but before you go down the path of buying more gear you should at least hook them up and see if you are satisfied with the results.

I do not think that I would run these in a multi-channel configuration, but if that is your intent I would run the BX8's in the front (connected to the lime output on the onboard soundcard) and the other set in the rear (connected to the black output of the onboard soundcard).

I prefer to use sub woofers with my speaker systems when possible / practical.  But you do not "need" one.  Using your onboard soundcard, this would be one of the channels on the orange output.  Don't forget to configure your sound card for whatever speaker configuration you are using.

Is this rig going to be used for heavy gaming / movie watching / other multimedia or mainly music?  If it was me, and it was going to be mainly music and I had a set of free BX8's and I didn't want to spend a bunch, I would run 2 channel stereo out of the computer with something like a NuForce icon and call it a day.

Thank you very much for your well explained response.  Im gonna be using this rig for mostly gaming, then music , and lastly movies.

When you say 2 channel stereo out of the pc what cable would that be the 3.5mm? (sry im a newbie with audio stuff)  And the Nuforce Icon does exactly what?  I googled it and I dont really understand what it does.  Thanks again for your time.
