Berkeshire Record Outlet currently has all four volumes of Allen Lowe's series of CDs, "That Devilin' Tune". It's an eclectic gathering of rare tracks charting the history of Jazz from its inception to 1950. The 36 CDs include big booklets containing the full text of Lowe's book, which puts the. Music into its historical concept. Unlike Ken Burns, Lowe does not see jazz purely as a race based music. He acknowledges the input of popular music and white musicians as well. He also charts Jazz's branches into other musical genres like dance bands and western swing. The tracks include the obvious choices, but also a large number of songs you can't get anywhere else. If you are looking for a comprehensive insight into the birth and flowering of jazz, you can't do better than 36 disks for $150.
