Just discovered a new genre

The only problem is, I don't know what the genre would be classified as. Let me give you a few examples of songs from this genre. It is turning out to be easily one of the most relaxing and fun to listen to genres I've ever heard.

(Guitar - Akiko)

(DJ Krush - Beyond Raging Waves)

(The Crystal Method - Smile)

Some others without youtube links...

Zircon - Ladder to the sky

Time Is Up - Over Water

Yoshida Brothers - Inside the Sun (remix)

Briza - The Metro

Bill Cornish - Precis

Essouria - Marine Beats

Kalla - Desire

So you probably noticed most of them have an asian / middle eastern feel to them, with modern bass lines and most likely synthesized percussion. Some of the songs listed may drift a little bit out of the genre, but they're similar, because they come up on the same Pandora station. Anyone know what this stuff is called?

Huh. That's pretty cool! I've never heard of this style of music. I really like it!

Some things are just best not labeled. That's what makes them special. It's hard to find unique music nowadays.

Haha, thanks man. I love it too, I just wish I could put a name on it to find more stuff like it.

Ooh, I've always loved Beyond Raging Waves. I discovered that one through LittleBigPlanet, from DJ Krush's track Song 2.

As for the genre, it's kinda hard to label electronic music because artists tend to overlap (maybe except for more commercial ones, which tend to stay with a specific genre). Take DJ Krush. He's known for hip-hop, but not the hip-hop we're used to. Indeed, your list spans a few genres. I'm not familiar with Crystal Method's stuff, but I know they're more known for their high energy music.

So, I wouldn't suggest a genre (though key words include downtempo, trip-hop, chill, ambient, etc.), so much as suggesting musicians for you to sample from. Try Nujabes (including others who contributed to the Samurai Champloo soundtracks), RJD2, and DJ Krush's CD Jaku (if you hadn't tried that out yet).

Gotcha man. I'm already a huge fan of RJD2 and similar artists, I just think a few of the songs are rather different. Aside from the asian themed songs, some of them remind me of electronic dance music or trance, but they're way too laid back, which in my opinion is a good thing. For example, Ladder to the Sky, Over Water and Smile. The Metro is similar, but seems more new age ish to me, if that makes any sense.

It also has some breaks on it. I only heard a bit of Zircon, but I do know Crystal Method, and they do both fast and mellow sound. Very nice find though OP wink.gif

Haha, thanks man. I'm pretty pumped about the find too, it's all I listen to on Pandora now.

You should really check out Kim Hiorthøy, Four Tet and Blockhead! I have never heard of the music in your post, so thank you! :)

I absolutely adore Blockhead. I haven't heard of those other two artists, however. I'm gonna go check them out, especially if you named them next to blockhead. This would leave me under the impression that they're good too. So they better be! Haha, honestly though thanks for the extra recommendations.

Another one: Pendulum + In flames = A new genre. cool.gif

Song: "Self vs self"

Wow, thanks for this its incredible! I'm confident in saying that this would fall into the 'trip-hop', 'chill-hop', 'alternative-hip hop' kind of genre.

Though I do agree, sometimes its nice not to have a name for music as it gets rid of any pre-conceived notions you might have before hearing it. It allows you to truly listen, without judgement.

Haha, thanks for the replies everyone. These aren't the responses I was expecting haha. Honestly I was waiting for some flames, "THIS IS (insert genre) YOU NEWB, AND IT SUCKS!" haha. Nah, but seriously I'm really digging it now. The songs I find myself listening to over and over are: Smile, Ladder to the Sky, Over Water and Metro.

Let's keep this thread going. I appreciate any suggestions of chill electronic music any day. OP, are you looking for music similar to the artists listed, or just relaxing electronic music in general (because there are a many variety of chill)? Really digging "Smile," by the way!

Honestly I'm just looking for more chill music, I only listed some of the songs I liked that came on. I really dig the chill electronic music, and the asian stuff is killer.
