Does every Apple device have a terrible headphone jack? (New MBP complaints)

The iPod has always been somewhat bad in my experience with using any TRS plug that's not the original iBud one. The plug will latch in like it should, but it sits pretty far from the edge of the iPod and is able to wiggle causing pops and hissing.

But it's much worse with my MBP, the plug does not ever latch in at the tip like it should if it's not the iBuds. As a result, any time the laptop wiggles and I have something in the HP out, it switches over to the speakers (using that painfully slow digital switch rather than a switched jack like my old HP uses).

Is anybody else seeing this problem, or is it pretty well isolated to this particular year MacBook Pro (mid-2009 I believe)

You could try bending the pins(?) in the jacks inwards so you get better contact and grip.

It's a little tough to get to the thing in the unibody in a recessed 3.5mm socket. The way it's all put together, to get to it without it being recessed back in the case, I'd have to lift the whole motherboard out (or logic board if you ask Apple and all their proprietary nonsense).

You don't have safety pins or something lying around?

I don't know if that's really the problem though. The iBuds plug goes flush with the laptop, and anything else (1/4" to 1/8" adapter, Sony headphones, PSP headset, RCA cables) stops short of the edge, like the socket is too short for the plugs, but no problems with the Apple branded plug.

Any thoughts?

Oh, I see.

That's an Apple thing if I am not mistaken.  Your gear needs to have a 3.5mm plug that is slightly trimmed at the very tip.  (Your iBuds have a slightly shorter plug than your other gear, right?)  You want an ATH-ESW9A (the US version of the ATH-ESW9) which has the slightly trimmed plug.

I'm kidding. Perhaps you can find a way to wear away the very end of the jack's interior so that other plugs will fit?  You only need to make it 0.5mm deeper I think.   I have not idea what to suggest on how to go about that, though.
