Laptop Jitter

Thread Starter

Running a Little Dot DAC_II off an inspiron 1520, and notice that every 1-2 seconds, theres a very noticeable jitter. I've tried changing power settings, and going into bios and turning off Intel IDA, though I'm not able to pinpoint the problem. I have no idea why there is a jitter being produced; I tried the amp & headphones on another computer, and it was just fine, jitter-less.

I have no idea what to do :C

Running Windows 7, 64-bit

Core 2 Duo T7500

4GB Ram

Also, you can hear the jitter when playing from either the amp (connected via USB), the laptop internal headphone port & even the laptops' own speakers.

EDIT: It sounds like the jitter has its own rhythm, not different from the clicking rhythm of the seconds you hear from a clock/watch.

Just found this here:

For me the problem with stuttering audio was solved like this:

1) Go to the device manager (start, run, devmgmt.msc)
2) Expand Network adapters (click on the plus sign)
3) Click the advanced tab.
4) Click “Disable Bands”
5) To the right, in the box named “Value”, select “Disable 802.11a”
6) Press ok.
7) Wait for it to finish.
8) Close the device manager.
9) Problem solved.

I’m using the 4.170.25.17 driver for my Wireless card (12/10/2007 by Broadcom). Sigmatel driver 6.10.0.5614.

Not experiencing any choppy audio anymore. Phew.

Aha!

I unfortunately do not have the same options as the person you quoted has, but I now know it is indeed the network card, as I just tried disabling it and the jitter went away..what a bad design flaw.

Thank you kind sir! I will now investigate my options now that I know the cause.

Indeed, I would never expect such a ridiculous flaw in a Dell laptop... I think you should contact their tech support.

Well, glad I helped pointing you in the right direction at least. smile.gif

That's not even the half of it. The official driver that Dell has for this card through their site is horrible, it constantly drops the connection (there are many that complain of this aspect). The solution was a driver that Microsoft put out via windows update for the very same card, and ever since I switched, I've been quite happy.

However this problem arose when I tried listening to music, and throughout all my searching I wasn't able to find a solution anywhere; closest I got was power & bios settings. I was very glad that you were able to help me pinpoint the problem, but was distressed (a few min ago) being unable to disable the A band via the current driver.. so it seemed as if I was presented with two choices: go with the Dell driver and fix the jittering, or stay with the Microsoft driver and keep a stable connection.

Luckily for me, on a whim I right-clicked the card in device manager, and selected Update Driver Software (through windows update), and there was an updated driver that I installed just a few moments ago, which fixed the jittering instantly.

I'm very happy and thank you sir for your help C:

Now let's hope the new driver won't introduce a new problem biggrin.gif
