Can't withstand interference from using front earphone pc port

Thread Starter

Hello,

Built a new gaming pc:

GA-H55M-UD2H mobo; i3-530 CPU; ASUS 6850 Direct CU; Coolermaster Elite 430 Case etc. etc.

I'm using the onboard Realtek Azalia audio chip using the audio out jack connected to my hi-fi seperates.

At night I used to plug my headphones into my integrated amplifier and everything is grand... however...

If I plug my NS1000's directly into my PC's front audio earphone jack the EMI and noise is excruciating unless I am playing CoD or something, but while surfing during 'silent' periods the noise is Chinese torture.

I experimented moving the lead (F_AUDIO on motherboard to front earphone pc jack) around to no avail.

I then unplugged my phones and turned on my amplifier and speakers to max ( during silence off course & amplifier is connected to audio_out on the back of the card ) and I heard exactly the same interference but obviously at a small proportion of volume compared to the front port.

Do any of you fine folk have a solution to this? It seems the lead connecting the front earphone jack to F_AUDIO on my motherboard is acting like an antenna.

ps. I've never had the same problem before with any pc I've owned.

pss. The reason I want to plug headphones into my pc is to be able to switch my amp off and have a cleaner untainted signal directly from my soundcard

Many Thanks,

Nocturnal

You could try shielding the lead.  Not sure what to suggest as far as how to do that.

A ferrite clamp on the lead, but you have to careful because some ferrites have resistance down to 18khz audio frequences and will cause treble roll off but thats the cheapest solution that will stop the cable acting as antenna , you could also try a sheilded cable but i don't think sheilded cables are avaible for headphones, you would be better off getting a extenal dac thats outside the noisey pc case.

Why are you using the onboard chipset that outputs bad quality sound, that's more prone to show issues like the one you're having? Just get some entry soundcard like Xonar DG or X-Fi XtremeGamer, and you'll be all set.

He's talking about the lead instead his computer, not his headphones' cable.

+1 on shielding the lead. Make sure to connect the shield to the computer's metal casing.

Foil tape may also work.

But a USB sound card or DAC will solve the problem more effectively.
