Switch between headphones and speakers

My headphones are currently plugged into my headphone out port in my SOUNDCARD. If I were to buy a cheap set of speakers (for video calls, i.e. perfect quality isn't needed) and plug it into my ONBOARD sound, would I easily be able to switch between whether the sound comes out of my headphones and speakers? I use windows 7

Most speakers have a headphone jack, especially cheaper ones. Plug your headphones into them and the speakers should mute, or you might have to turn them off. But if you only have one audio output to connect to, then there's not really a way to select between them in Windows.
