So, as a poor college student, I am typically broke after I have paid my rent, bills, groceries, etc. But, I know someone who is offering to sell me a used, but good condition Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable with a Shure cartridge, Technics headshell, and road case for a total of $275. I actually can scrap the money together in my pursuit of analog HiFi, which I really want to get in to, but here's the catch: no groceries (or beer) for a week. That means I will have to subsist off of 10 eggs, 8 cans of soup and beans, and rice for 9 days until I get my next pay check. The question I pose, is do you think it's a good enough deal for the TT, and whether it's worth it?

Whenever a hobby gets in the way of life you know you have a problem. Do what every sensible college student does and spend that $275 on beer and bud. wink.gif

Can you haggle it down to $225?

Nah, I already got him down from $320, and it has so much stuff included that doesn't normally come with the TT. Opinion?

I voted "yes" but I can stand to lose a few pounds so YMMV.  (no clue about the turntable though, sorry)

Any other time, yes. But this time I am stuck at a crossroads. It just seems like a good deal, but being new to vinyl, I am not certain if I am the most competent judge of a good deal here.

Wow.

Perhaps he can wait? Unless he already has another buyer lined up.

Wish it could, but if I don't act soon, then he's just going to auction it off on eBay.

Ever heard of Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? Physiological needs heavily outweigh a hobby such as audio (which I would classify as self-actualization).

I mean, you could reduce the quality of the food you eat, say, by not buying name-brand foods, but not eating whatsoever doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I'm not saying 10 eggs, 8 cans of soup and rice will transform you into a scurvy-infected yardstick in a week, but it does sound like you're going a bit too far. I voted no, although granted, I'm not interested in vinyl in the least.

then start with lower (cheaper) stuff, once you gain the aknowledge, sell it and move up. repeat as many times as necesary. biggrin.gif

Sure you can do it. If you have any hi-fi loving friends, they'll understand (hopefully) and help you out for a week (again, hopefully).

I'm ready to blow half that on an average quality Pioneer (mid 70s) TT with a cart I can't find a thing about. At least you'd be starting with some great stuff with Technics and Shure.

I'd say it's a psychological addiction, we're past needs here! biggrin.gif

And I would have to say music can be quite comforting... so let's put it on that second block.
