I have an old iPod with defective HDD, what is the largest capacity it can take? Kindly indicate which brand/model of HDD can serve as replacement. I am also planning to install rockbox btw. Thanks in advance.

I would recommend doing a Compact Flash card installation instead of a physical hard drive.  In that case you can do a 64GB CF card.

I have a CF card adapter specifically made for the 5th Gen iPod if you're interested.

I'd go w/SoulSyde's suggestion, especially since not only is the battery life increased w/a CF card, but the speed of the iPod is better as well (no moving parts to wait for a search).

I think it would cost a lot if I buy a64GB CF. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I've recently upgraded my ipod 5th gen 80GB to 240GB from apricorn upgrade kit. very happy with the upgrade, with no problems.

hmm..seems like I cant attach a link for some reason right now but if you google apricorn ipod kit, you can see their site and upgrade HDD available for your ipod looking at the chart given on the site.

I think I have also read somewhere if you get thicker ipod back for the 30gb from ebay etc. you can install the 240GB HDD. though not sure so better confirm that.

Another point, the 30gb has 32RAM, whereas the 80GB had 64RAM. not sure how this will effect the running of ipod if you upgrade to the 240GB HDD.

hope this helps

It seems the price of a 64gb compact flash card has dropped to where it's no longer a pipe dream:  http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=64GB+CF+card&hl=en&prmd=ivnsfd&resnum=1&biw=1280&bih=909&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=2582263692160680662&ei=cDhTTZCpBcWAlAe_v5HsCg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CHEQ8wIwAA#
