Having owned both, I would say the BX5A. It is superior to the AV40 in every aspect. To my ears, it wasn't even close. I wish I had bought the BX5As first and just skipped over the AV40s.

Only based on my research (quite a bit) I would caution you against the M-Audio's. See the multiple problems listed here from THEIR website:

The Swans can be purchased here:

Thanks for the link. Some reviews on head-fi have been saying that swans are very good quality speakers.I hope shipping costs are not that high and that they deliver to Malta.
E-mailed the audio insider to check about delivery cost.I could not create an account with the region set as Malta it only gave me US options...
Are you sure they deliver to europe?
There speaker range is so good that I am unsure about which one I should buy.I would not want to buy anything m-audio now.
Just got a reply back from the audio insider.
They replied "I'm sorry but we cannot ship Swan products out of North America."
Where can I order these speakers? :*(

Do you have anyone in the US that could buy them for you and then ship them to you?...just a thought.

Brian.
I do not brian will check the other dealers
Was going to e-mail this dealer http://www.swans-europe.eu/impressum-swans-speaker-europe+M52087573ab0.html but he does not even have a shopping cart for this website. The one residing in the uk shipping costs about 200Euros which is very expensive.
I also recommend the receiver/amp and speakers route. For a couple of reasons.
Generally, I think you can put together a better sounding system that way. It also makes upgrades much easier because you can swap out individual parts instead of replacing the whole system. Since you're not starting with a huge budget, it will allow you to put together something decent now, and then upgrade whatever pieces you want as have more money available.
I'm also a fan of buying used because you can frequently resell whatever you don't need for pretty much the same cost as when you bought it. If you buy new, you're going to lose a pretty substantial percentage of the value immediately.
Found a retailer selling the MK11 for 385Euro (inc shipping)
Not sure if I would buy the swan speakers or go for something JBL/B&W with an amp or active KRK speakers.

Check these retailers out for me please and see whats best for a 300Euro budget :)
