Help choosing, dt770pro vs ath-m50, or other cans?

Hey. Im looking for a pair of closed cans, they will be mostly used mostly for music(60% hiphop, jazz and some pop), but also movies and some gaming, and considering the gamingpart, im under the impression that the DT's has the best soundstage?

 

I have been looking alot at the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO, and i've tried the 80-ohm edition, which i liked. But considering this is quite the investment for a student, i want to buy the right one. I see that the ath-m50 is generelly recommended, and they seem like a great pair of cans also, but i dont have the oppertunity to try these..

After reading some comparisons, it seems the DT 770 is more bass-heavy, i like bass and listen alot to hiphop, so i don't think of this as a bad attribute.

My sources will be my laptop, my desktop, and when traveling, my samsung galaxy s. I have not decided on the amplifier part, but considering the udac-2 or fiio e7. Not sure about this yet.

 

Both headsets are around the same price here in Norway.

 

Maybe the Shure 840 is something i also should consider?

One reason why the M50 is recommended so much is because they are quite affordable in the US. They cost significantly less than the DT770 there. But if the M50 and DT770 are the same price for you in Norway, then I think the DT770 is a better choice.

 

The consensus is indeed that the DT770/80Ω is bass heavy. But the other versions (32Ω, 250Ω, 600Ω) are not as bassy. Except for some newer 600Ω models. There was a discussion here a while ago about that and from what I recall it's not possible to know before hand which 600Ω type you are buying. Beyer can be quite confusing. But you'll be safe with the 80Ω version.

The DT770 Pro lends itself much better for gaming than the M50s. The soundstage between the two is no comparison. The DT has a ridiculous soundstage compared to the M50. For music, they are sort of similar, with the DT770 Pro having more bass, while the M50 has slightly more mids. They would both appeal to the same people though. Both have sparkly treble. M50 is truly bang for buck, giving you SQ prety much on par with the DT770 Pro for less than half the price. You're pretty much paying extra for the Beyer comfort and gaming excellence otherwise. Other candidates would be:

 

 

Creative Aurvana Live/Denon D1001: Similar to the M50, with less sparkle... slightly more laid back, but still similar. They are better for gaming due to more soundstage depth and width, though not close to the DT770's epic soundstage.

 

Denon D2000: Going by what I hear of my D7000, I imagine them to have the strong bass the DT770 Pros have with a similar soundstage, and is able to be driven a lot easier than the Pro 80s. I really wanna try them out at some point. I like looking for good mid-fi cans to recommend. I hear they are even better than the DT770 Pros.

 

 

My personal choice would be to go for the DT990s. They are sure better than the DT770 Pros IMHO, with better quality bass, though the treble is definitely more sparkly. They sound more mid fi, while the DT770 Pros are just barely between low to mid fi.

 

If all you're using is gonna be a portable amp/dac like the UDAC2 or E7, I'd probably go with the Denons or CAL. The Beyers like more power. As much as I love the M50, I can't recommend them for gaming. Just can't.

I think for me, it's dt770>m50's.

 

If you mean the Denon AH-D2000, one store has monopoly on Denon in Norway, and the price is just over 500$, twice as much as Beyerdynamic and m50.. But, i have the possibility to try them in a couple of days so i'll do that, and maybe just import them.. Creative Aurvana Live is not a bad idea, and i'll se if i can give these and the dt990 a go in the weekend as well. Seems ive gotten a few missions now!:)

As for the amp/dac part, i have not decided on this yet, and have little knowledge on this part.. But i prefer not paying more for them then i do for the headphones, at least not for starters.

Thanks:). I have only tried the 80 ohm, and i was quite pleased with this. Yeah, i think 600ohm will require a bit to much from my amp/dac budget anyway?

Yeah, it depends on what you want. The DT770 Pros have a bit more bass than mids, which turns off a lot of people, while the M50 is a little more balanced. It really all depends on what you want. I really wanna hear the D2000, because I'm almost positive they're gonna be exactly what you want.
