Digital signal from laptop

Hi, everyone.  I am trying to see the best way I could get a digital signal out of my laptop to feed a NuForce uDAC2 that I am considering purchasing.  From what I have been reading, you can simply hook the DAC up via any USB port on the laptop, correct?  And this completely bypasses the computer's soundcard?  It seems that some people contend that a digital signal via USB is somehow inferior to an optical or S/PDIF one, however.  Is there any truth to that and, if so, please explain.

Many thanks

With the uDAC you have no choice and so USB is the way to go.

You are correct in that the uDAC becomes the sound card.

Optical/Coaxial/USB/Firewire/AES can all sound great - it is all down to the implementation and so better not to assume that any are inherently better than others.

Thank you, 0rangutan, for your response.

I have another question.  After reading Gregorio's article on 24bit vs 16bit (http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/415361/24bit-vs-16bit-the-myth-exploded) I thought I was getting an understanding of the difference between the two.  In short, he states that although there is a great increase in resolution in going from 16 to 24 bits with a consequent increase in dynamic range, the difference is inconsequential because of other constraints, e.g. since the dynamic range of a recording doesn't exceed 60 dB's or so, the 96 dB of dynamic range provided by a 16bit CD or some other audio file is more than sufficient.  However, I came across a post by MirandaX (http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/9620/di-0-and-usb-digital-out#post_111729) in which she draws a distinction between the audio signal and the "internal word size of the DAC," with a 20 or 24 bit DAC actually sounding superior to a 16bit device, all things being equal, of course.

Could somebody please explain this to a n00b?

Thanks

Any help?

With a device as cheap and low-end as a uDAC, I would neither worry about the connection method, and especially not high-res music. :)
