And guess what ....  IT'S A REVELATION .... HD600 sounds fantastic!!!
I think I like HD600 a little more than HD650.  The mid is, just there and honest.
The bass, is just right, not ALWAYS there, dynamic, fast and never overwhelming.
Treble is just right, never bright, never harsh.
HD600 capture different kind of detail than HD650.  HD650 may be more detail in the mids?  HD600 is more detail in the bass and treble.  Did I say gorgeous mids?

I am very very happy ............

Glad to read that you enjoy them!!! Were you usong the stock HD600 cable? Could you try using the HD650 cable and compare?

I have 600s with a 650 cable.  I only bought it because my 600 cable shorted and the 650 cable is heavier along with being less expensive.  No difference in sound to my ears.

I like lighter cable actually.

As my musical preferences have shifted over the years (and my hearing aged too) and after more than decade of enjoying my HD 600, I have decided to switch to a darker/fatter/mellower headphones - HD 650. Will see how it pairs with my Schiit stack - I think it should be just perfect! My trusty old 600s were just sold to a fellow head-fier, they will be missed for sure. New 650s are on their way here (grabbed them for 419,00 on Amazon)!

Glad I'm still in Sennheiser family and will stay there forever, I think!

PS: guess it's not really an opposite.. just a bit different flavor of the same.

^ Thanks.

I am surprised to see how HD600 and HD650 sound almost identical out of my JVC TV headphone out, but a world different out of my Lehmann BCL.

I'll see how they compared out of my Vali.  HD650 sounds beautiful through Vali.

Tuco, do you feel safe plugging HD600 to Schiit Lyr.

I still remember some sensitive headphone driver blew up caused by the mighty Lyr.

What do you think?

I'd just plug when it's off to be safe... And then, when it's plugged, you can turn the amp on or off anytime without issues, as it has a muting relay.

No worries at all with the Lyr.  I unplug before powering it off, but that's just habit.  The Lyr sounds great paired with the 600s IMO.

This topic has been probably already discussed but I didn't find any accurate answer. What do you guys think about pairing my HD600 with a Fiio X5. And how much percentage of the potential of the HD600 would I be using while driving it with the X5. Does it worth it ? Thank you.

I've had my HD600s the longest so far in my collection. I've gone through and parted with countless others that technically should be superior (HD800, D7000/D5000, LCD2, JH13pro) but time and time again, I find myself unable to part with the HD600. They just seem to nail everything for me. Just purchased a Schiit Lyr recently and find them that much more better too! Can't see myself parting with these at all.

My 600s are only a year or two old, but they aren't going anywhere.  They are companion to my Sextetts that I've had since new late 70's.  I might add a set of planar cans some time down the road, but no rush.

I have heard that the hd600 pairs well with the ibasso dx90. Lot of discussion on the dx90 thread. Might want to ask your question on the X5 thread also.

You'll get all sorts of answers to this one ;)

From my personal testing when I had the tour unit - I loved both my HD600 and DT880 (250 ohm) with the X5 when I had it (I used high gain).  I guess the difference between myself and some others is that when comparing, I carefully matched volumes with an SPL meter and a test tone.  I noticed no significant loss in dynamics.

I am purchasing the X5 - should be here in a couple of weeks.  I ordered it mostly because of it's versatility with both IEMs and full range cans.  It would probably struggle with anything very high impedance or very low sensitivity - but IMO it's great with the HD600.  They're not that hard to drive anyway.

What a pleasant surprise!  What a great headphone the HD 600 is!  I feel a bit stupid for not starting here a few years ago, because turning your nose at the HD 600 is like disrespecting your own mother.  It has earned its place, and it continues to give you love even when you run around like a know-it-all jackass.

Here is the interesting thing for me:  Every one of my other headphones does something better than the HD 600, and sometimes to a rather significant degree.  I will argue that on every single metric one could identify, except general comfort (for which they are outstanding after some gentle bending sessions), they struggle to excel in relative terms.  But here is the thing, they also show me what every single other headphone is lacking.

Did you get used to another headphone, maybe start listening through rose colored glasses as you focused on the strengths and learned to live with the weaknesses?  Well, the HD 600 just smacks those glasses off your face and tells you like it is:  This is what music is supposed to sound like, this is how you connect to the musicians and forget about the gear.

They are a great pairing with the NAD D1050 which I am also convinced plays a similar role in the world of DAC/amps.  It just sounds right, top to bottom, side to side, just sounds like music in liquid form.  Not air (others have more extended treble), not crystal (others are more resolving of detail), not granite (others have a more solid foundation).... just liquid in the sense that it is organic and free flowing.  Certainly not syrupy, nor veiled in any way, as they are as balanced and unimposing as I could ever ask.  They also sound decent right out of my macbook, and a little better through a Dragonfly, but the NAD brings it home.  For me, YMMV.

Still breaking them in, but they are already making themselves known to me and putting my other headphones on notice:  Sure, you may be newer, you may have a little more sex appeal and dive into the soundtrack with a little better form, but I can still bring it home, without complaint, without bravado, and if you are really about the music you probably won't be missing out on anything.  Great job Sennheiser, I will happily keep these for a very long time.

Can you comment on sound quality/differences between your hd700 v hd600?
