Unfortunately I don't know anything about connecting to a computer but I will say that you just described the O2 IMHO. There is also a version with a built in DAC which is highly regarded. In the UK Epiphany Acoustics makes the O2 and ODAC. They do a home trial so it is risk free to try it.
Have a read of the story of the O2 and it's designer. Interesting story. HTH

The headphone output is also an line out , it means that you can connect it to an headphone amp with the right cables . A simple jack to jack stero 3.5mm male for the o2 , or an stereo jack 3.5 male to stéreo rca male .

So you don't need an DAC . Just an headphone amplifier and keep the apogee as DAC .

The momentum's are pretty nice out of a portable source with no amp. They do benefit but not specifically required. They sound fine out of both my iPod classic and fiio x3

Edit: Of course the 600s are better and I prefer them to my Momentums which is why I'm selling them but they're much easier to drive and a bit more of a pleasant sound.

Don't forget, closed cans get really hot on your head/ears, too! That's my chief complaint, besides the raw sound quality difference.

I had HD 439 and I own two Momentums. The HD 439 has the same sound signature as the Momentum, with a wider stage and more comfy, but much less clarity and fidelity to my ears.

Keep both. Momentum for nighttime and portable use, HD 600 for daytime and home use

Got my pair of HD600s today.  Very pleased with them.  I never had appreciated how "smooth" they actually were until now, when I've a few hours to listen to them.
