Interesting for me is going to be in about 10 days time.  I'll pick up my HD700 from NY (business trip).  Will be interesting to see where that sits in relation to both the Beyer and HD600.

You ever listen to the HD700's. If not do so carefully first, you may not like the treble, or you may. J&R Music World on Broadway near City Hall carries them. Beware of the HD800's they usually stock them as well. I  just checked, both in stock and back to the regular prices.

My old office was across the street from them. Now I'm across the river, my wallet is out of reach. Being across the street is dangerous.

Got the HD700s at a little over USD 600 - so thought it was worth 'taking a punt'.  Haven't heard the HD800 yet - I know I'll probably get there eventually.  I'm just taking my time and enjoying the journey :)

That's a steal. While you're there, give the HD800's a listen too, you'll need to find the next thing to work on.:D

I'll be test driving a prototype OTL headphone amp using obscure TV tubes and diodes.

It is a reaction to the silly high prices of many NOS tubes...no tube over $5!

It's for my HD600s...so updates will follow...

I'll be interested in the results, especially if you can tune into reruns of "I Love Lucy." Mainstream audio tubes have skyrocketed in price.

Hello all!

I am looking at the HD600s for purchase. I have the DT880s and enjoy them. But I am looking for a second pair of headphones. What is the difference between the HD600 and DT880? Is the detail in the soundstage improved? How is the build quality of the HD600s?

Thank you!

Bob,

Those are questions that have been answered at length throughout the forums.  Use the search, and you'll find more info then you ever wanted.

That's the point...it will be 3 in 1: TV, amp and foot warmer!

What? No thermal printer? OK, so that's old printer tech, but it goes with the tubes.

Actually that's an interesting project, the amp, not our imaginative concoction.

My Spud use two NOS $5 6CL6 TV tubes and one NOS $10 6CA4 rectifier...and sounds amazing...:D

This amp drives most cans and efficient speakers and can be built for well under $500!

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

It is definitely possible but the designer has to 1) know what he's doing and 2) enjoy the process of trial and error to tweak for the best possible results as the tweaks just haven't been done yet for these odd ball tubes.

Cool!!  cant wait for the updates.

Side note... if you give it a bad review those $5 tubes will drop down to a buck or two on audiogone and epay. (wink wink)

back on topic.  I finally have some old 300+ hour HD600 replacement drivers incoming for mine.  These cans have been dormant for 5-6 years at least.  My rig has changed a lot over that time.  it will be fun putting them through their paces.

Yeah, downside is the amp likely will not be able to use other tubes and the tubes we use will not be usable in other amps...so no chance for tube arbitration!

Has anyone here used aftermarket cables with their HD 600? Would be interested to hear some comparisons between some.
