HD600 brighter than Q701, really? Maybe it was because the Q701 was leaner in the low end but it sounded brighter to me.

Agree. I've owned AKG K701, K702, Q701 - all while owning the HD600. No question to me - the AKGs all have a brighter presentation.

My K712 is definitely brighter than my HD600.

Hi guys,

I am about to buy my first headphones in 250$. Currently having an GR07 MKII and love it. So, I would expect the new HP's to have similar sound signature or good overall sound

I have shortlisted these :

1)HD600 from 310$ from accessoryjack [Is this reliable website selling genuine senns and are the products eligible for warranty]

2)DT880 250 ohm for 230$ from amazon

3)HD598 for 210$  from ebay

I listen to rock, pop, classical, bollywood.

Also I dont have a decent amp, just having a cheap chinese tube amp, cannot afford one right now, but maybe in next 1 year I can.

And i will certainly keep the HP's for more than 5 years. Build, durability, serviceability is also important for me.

Are the HD600 worth 80$ over the DT880/250?

Are the 250 ohm version of 880's inferior to to 600 ohm version?

Which are easier to drive and less picky about the amps : HD600 or DT880/250

Which decent amp in 100$ can extract good sound out of these two?

My ears are a bit long, and will they fit in comfortably in round earpads of DT880's? [oval pads of senns seems better in pictures]

I live in India, so only sennheiser is well established brand here and has service centers, good customer service, helpline etc.

Now I went through many threads in headfi but still confused which would be the right choice.

please help me out guys

many thanks

Out of the ones you listed there, I enjoy the HD 600 the most. Whichever can you get, you really need to think about making sure you pair it to a decent amp.

which amp pairs with HD600 well and gives warmer or brighter sound output in 100$ budget?

FiiO E11 does it? But I have to wait for an year to purchase even that

I currently have this :

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-12-6-series-valve-12AU7-6922-6N11-Tube-Headphone-Amplifier-amp-preamplifier-/291058811672?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item43c4750318

Is it any good?

That's completely subjective. Technically, no, the HD600 are not 35% better than the DT880. However, depending on your preferences and how you value money one could easily consider the HD600 to be worth the premium. They are about equivalent on technical ability (both very good and great values) so it comes down to what signature you prefer. Both are quite neutral but the 880s are brighter while the HD600 are more rolled off in the treble. The 880s have a little better sub-bass extension while the HD600 have more of a mid-bass hump. The mids of the DT880 are recessed compared to the HD600 but I actually consider its mids to be more neutral. In other words, the 880's mids are slightly below neutral while the HD600's mids are slightly above neutral. All of that goes into whether you prefer one over the other for your particular tastes and music. Short answer: They are both easily worth the prices you quoted ($310 and $230).

If you're not using a high output impedance amplifier like an OTL tube amp then no. There is more standard driver variance than there is difference between the different ohm versions, sound quality wise. Its a single headphone that comes in different impedances so that you can match them effectively with what you're amping them with. Most SS amps match better with the 250 ohm, or even 32 ohm, because you get equivalent sound quality compared to the 600 ohm but with more usable volume range.

The 880s are definitely more picky and require a little more power but neither are particularly easy to power. If you listen to any quietly recorded stuff you'll need an amp to get adequate volume from either of them.

I'd recommend the O2 which should work great with either of them. If you get the 880 don't get a bright amp like the Magni. With the HD600, however, a bright amp might even be ideal depending on how much treble you like.

They both have quiet large pads that are extremely comfortable. Unless you've got ridiculously large ears I doubt you would have an issue with either headphone.

devhen, thanks for you detailed reply,

Amp availability is also a problem for me as I live in India

so for SS amps : i can purchase only : fiio e11 for 65$ and altoids CMOY amp 9 volt powered : for 40$

else for tube amps, bravo audio ocean and little dot mki+ both at 120$ [need to save up $$$ for them]

right now I have this tube amp [yet to receive by the post] : http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-12-6-series-valve-12AU7-6922-6N11-Tube-Headphone-Amplifier-amp-preamplifier-/291058811672?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item43c4750318

I suppose they are warm or slightly bright.

I right now use GR07 MKII from last 1 month, completely like it.

Which of the HD600 and DT880/250 sound closer/similar to the sound of GR07 MKII ?

i used to have hd650, hd600, dt990 & dt880 in both 250 and 600 ohm, and some grado cans.  of course, i sold them all years ago.

after taking several years off, i made a comeback to the world of headphone/amp-fi world a few months ago.

since i couldnt spend too much money, i purchased a new hd600 without thinking much.

i love/prefer it over all the cans that i mentioned above, and i have no intention to purchase anything else.

btw, i got a brand new pair for $300 with free shipping on ebay.  this seller had the price at $400 but i offered $300 and they accepted.

not sure if i am allowed to post a link here.  if youre interested, pm me and i will let you know.

Welcome back.   There is a pair locally, very minty, with box for $250.  I'm trying hard not to think about them too much.  I have 2 pairs of HD580s with hd600 grilles......but still....$250....GAHHHH!!

So excited, I may be able to finally get my hands on a Morgan Jones amplifier, which is considered to be one of the best amplifiers to pair with the HD 580/600s. I've been using a solid state DIY amp ever since I had my HD 600s and they sounded really great even with that amplifier, so I guess I'm going to get eargasm today.

Huh. Never heard of it.

Perhaps, it's a Hungarian product.

Morgan Jones is a DIY amp designer and author...

I don't know of any amps that he actually built.

His designs were available through Headwize IIRC
