Hey man, don't keep secrets from me! biggrin.gif

I just bought some Dk Bronze hammercoat paint for my plate and English Chestnut stain for my base. I would love to see what alternatives you know about though...

For real. If I didn't already have one I would snatch it up. +1 for a great amp.

x2,  i hv the DV336 too...great amp...my favorite tube combo would be the 5998 + Sylvania old tubes..

gave a very spatial soundstage with a beautiful warm bloom.

I am not a fan of DAC/Amp combo, just a personal opinion there. I would say take it one step at a time, it is important to have a game plan when upgrading as it will save you a ton of cash. I believe you will hear more difference from the amp than the DAC assuming your DAC is of decent quality.

For a Solid State in the under $400 range what would you suggest?

I've been using the Rega EAR MKII.  It is right at $400.  Very clean sound and no background noise

Schiit Asgard 2 is a great option.

Have you heard the A2 w/ the HD600? Is it bright?

Yes I have. I think it sounds very clean. I no longer own the A2 as I prefer the overall sound of the Valhala, pair that with the ability to "customize" the sound with tubes and the Valhala is in my mind a much better package.

I have auditioned the HD600s with A2s lined out from my aune t1.. felt that it was similar to the amp out from the t1 except a larger soundstage. forgot to use wasapi that time though :/

Yes that was my favourite combo too, together with occasionally the mouse ears instead of the Sylvania...

I haven't tried that combo yet but I do have the tubes for it.... last 2 configurations is TS 7236 + Sylvania chrome dome & TS 7236 + Raytheon GTB. I like the Raytheon's a lot. Should roll in the 5998 instead of constantly saving it. hehe biggrin.gif

LOL.. I do this, too.. I save it to be used with my 'favorite' tubes.. think I need to suck it up and just a get a second 5998 (as a backup).  It's a terrific output tube.
