Have you considered the Schiit Asgard? I'm using it now and I still love the combination.

I find the HD600 to sound superb and velvety smooth with jazz, and classical, but lacking for rock.

I like them for most rock - if you get a recording that's too bright, it can get piercing though.  Depends how much bass you are looking for as well.  I'm not a bass-head by any means - so I find the overall balance of the K701 pretty good.

For anything I don't like (rock/pop) with the K701, I niormally switch to the SR325i anyway.

I think given his choices and his source he's looking for a DAC and amp in one box.

I'd personally go for the Icon HD, but I have to caution about it based on my listening - there seems to be a boost in the upper bass which causes the HDP to distort at that range on higher volume settings.Posted it somewhere on the HDP thread and I seem to be the only one who encountered it, but I think its important to manage expectations if you're gonna spend that cash. If I did (instead of a free audition with the dealer) I'd be angry about it, given how returns are so problematic in my country.

Correct. So you're saying go for the HD as opposed to the HDP?

I really don't know if I need a preamplifier, or if those extra features are worth the money.

If you would like to use the DAC to feed speakers than the HDP will be quite convenient, otherwise, go for the HD and save some money for music.

Thanks for your advice. Do you know anything about the Maverick D1?

No experience with it or how it compares to the HD/HDP.

I'm trying to make my first desktop DAC/Amp purchase to use with my iMac and HD600. I've been considering:

Yulong D100

Nuforce Icon HD or HDP

iBasso D12

Audinst HUD-mx1

I'm leaning towards the Nuforce for convenience sake because I can get it on Amazon, but if the others are leagues ahead of it, I will seriously consider them.

Somebody please help me, my head hurts from researching on these forums so much haha

Personally I would lean more toward the D100.  From everything I've read, it's amp and DAC are the most capable out of your listed options.  You'll also have the option to upgrade your amp later on if you so choose.  You should also checkout the JDS Labs built O2 & ODAC combo.

I just pulled the trigger on the NFB 12.1. So we will see how that works out in 4-7 days.

The only use I see for it is if you want to use it for speakers; headphone amps have their own volume control. Unless, of course, you might want something like the K1000 later on, so you can use a speaker power amp to drive it and use the preamp to control it. The NFB12 has a preamp also AFAIK so enjoy the savings and don't wonder too much how much "better" Nuforce might have been. Buy music with the extra cash, and spare pads too.

Thanks for the advice Protege. Since I'm squared away on pads and music, maybe I'll check out a pair of DT880 with my savings. It seems like a lot of HD-600 owners have those as well.

How does the K701 compare with DT880 for rock? I am not a bass-head either. I am much more familar with IEMs Vs. full size cans. Have you heard any IEMs that you like? Aside from the HD600, I would like other points of reference to better determine if the K701 that you like, I would also enjoy.

Both are good - relatively quick, detailed, and handle rock well.  DT880 has more bass punch and extension - but the mids are further back.  To me they can sometimes sound a little on the dry side.  I pretty much always use a tube set-up with my 880s - helps bring the mids forward a little.  The K701 don't have the same bass punch - but have much better mid-range.  Comfort goes to the Beyers - but if you replaced the K701 strap with a custom one without the bumps - it might be close.

K701 are quite like Brainwavz B2 / Fischer DBA2 - bass is there, coherent, but not to the forefront.  Mids are nicely presented and forward.  Detail is high.  Obviously though, the IEMs don't have a soundstage that can compete.

Couldn't really give you a DT880 like IEM.  Most of the other IEMs I've owned were from the Shure line, and their mids are quite forward (opposite of the DT880 really).  I currently have the SE535 Ltd Ed - and they could also be said to be a little like the K701 - bass is not emphasised - but is well textured and defined.  Mids are forward and engaging.  Highs on the 535 Ltd Ed are not as airy - but are detailed.  Big difference is with soundstage - K701 is wide and deep.  SE535 Ltd Ed is very intimate.  Both have excellent imaging.

OK, bit the bullet...after going back and forth between the 600 and 650, I went for the Dakmart special on the 600's (it didn't seem clear cut that the 650's were even favored by everyone). I mostly have used a large number of iem's (TF10, etys, Miles Davis, and quite a few others), though I have dabbled a bit with closed phones, never open ones (mine never felt comfortable, hard to listen for a long time). Anyway, I bought an iBasso T3 a while back on a whim (was cheap), hardly use it (also own a HiSound Studio, but had problems with it, and I think it will spend the next 6 months or so going back and forth between New Jersey and China, if I ever see it again). Will the T3 be enough to power the Senn's? (use ipod touch/ipad/Razr Maxx, and 1 PC, 1 iMac).

Thanks

Would the beyer DT990 be a good companion to my HD600? I'd like something with a completely different sound signature for hip-hop, rock, electronica.
