After some careful listening I got a hypothesis for that phenomenon.

Although hd600 is hi-resolution but it plays low quality mp3s with correct tone color,

therefore restores the original musical feeling a lot and makes it sounds better than other HPs.

Any poor people that don't yet have an amp, try the Creative X-Fi Go Pro until you can buy a monster amp.

Somehow the stupid $40 thing can drive the HD-600 quite well! It makes no sense really, but it does. Sat there listening to it for hours without complaints.

Didn't even need to crank the volume to 100%.

Only $30 online or $40 at Best Buy. Return it if you hate it.

Also had good results for this with the HD-598, KRK KNS-8400, but not the Q701/K601 (obviously).

Best $40 DAC I ever heard..I like it more than even the E7 and Nuforce Icon Mobile. However it's not good for the very easily to drive portables.

Seems fine on the 8400 though.

It is about one years old and hardly used.

Music files include mp3 and flac, I'm suprised that hd600 makes some low quality mp3 files sounds better.

How can a high resolution HP doing this?

Right now my only amp is a FiiO E6, looks insufficient for 600. I shall try it tonight.

I had read that article, obviously E6 is aiming at portable market, its power level may not satisfy hi-impedance HPs.

However, I found my android tablet alone can drive hd600 quite well in a quiet room.

Thanks for the suggestion.

After some web surfing I am interested in FiiO E10, mainly because it combines DAC and AMP at a good price.
Does anyone use E10 with HD600?

tdockweiler, were you using all the creative effects too? or did it sound good with everything set with no effects applied?

Question: I have seen several times that the HD700 was recommended (by several users, not just by you) for people who were looking for an upgrade over the HD600/650 with a similar sound signature. Now I did not read the entire HD700 thread, but in the part that I did read it seemed to be the general opinion that the HD700 was tuned almost exactly like the HD800, perhaps a little bit "warmer", but still a far cry from the HD600/650. Is this indeed wrong? Or why is the HD700 so often recommended?

Most of the early impressions that I have read re the HD 700 are that they pretty much fit right in between the HD6xx and HD 800, both in performance and price, with punchier bass than the HD 800 and more treble extension than the HD 6xx. Some have complained about spiky treble but Sennheiser might be trying to correct this for the production model.

It should be alot more powerful than the Creative X-Fi Go at least, and a great budget DAC.

The E10 is a little lacking in power for the hd600 for me

No effects at all and I didn't install any of the Creative software. It worked without any software CDs etc. Nice! Probably works in Linux too.

Isn't the E10 kind of dark? Maybe it would be a poor match for the HD-600? Never tried it though.

Strangely enough I don't like the HD-600 with any portable amps I own (Icon Mobile, Airhead, E5) but with the X-Fi Go Pro it was OK.

I would say the 598 is a better match for it. The X-Fi seems to give most headphones an improved soundstage.

Now of course I don't suggest people go and buy an HD-600 and a $40 DAC and call it a day, but it's quite nice for travel or on a second PC or something.

Sigh I remember a time when we wondered if things like the RS HR-2 were good enough for the Senn 600 ;)

Yeah the E7 was also lacking, the E7+E9 combi sounds great with the hd600 though.

the e7-e9 is nice but the e10/e9 or d3/e9 combo is better sonically. the e7 as a dac is harsh vs the other 2 combos. But, believe it or not a JDSLABS CMOY sounds better than the E9 for the hd600 IMO

I have had excellent results with the old-school Simpl A1 which was made for the early (3-4G) iPods, and is equalized for use with the headphone out rather than a LOD.

I actually prefer it to my Headstage Arrow with my HD600.

Since E10 can't be used as a portable AMP, I am looking up at the E17.

Pity for my wallet.
