I don't think I'll be changing from my 650s though.    

 

The HD 600 and the HD 650 are both great headphones. The soundstage of the HD 650 is awesome and I find they situate me quite inside the music; the HD 600 have a narrower soundstage and make the much sound slightly further away from me.

 

I find the boomier bass of the HD 650 obscures some details that the HD 600 clearly reveals and for that reason listening to classical and acoustic jazz on the HD 650 is slightly frustrating, but the HD 600 sounds more evenly balanced and natural sounding, whatever type of music I play through them. 

 

I'm grateful that I have the HD 650 and HD 600 and they're both great headphones. If I could only choose one of them, I'd opt for the HD 600. smile.gif

own a pair of hd600s and went for a PA2V2, for $60, mentioned on the CNET site today:

anyone have any experience with these?

 

I really enjoy the sound of my Alessandro MS1s, but fall in love with the sound of my HD600s when hit my music just right!

 

hate to pose the question again, but does anyone have a note-worthy mods to the HD600s?

As far as I am aware of, there are four main mods that people do:

 

1. Remove the thin foam between the drivers and your ears (it's easily removable and replaceable).

 

2. Replace the cable; the HD 650 cable is popular although it is now standard on the HD 600 as well.

 

3. Remove the little foam in the center on the outer side of the drivers.

 

4. Replace the drivers with HD 650 units.

 

 

 

The first three are of debatable merit.  I've done the first two myself and couldn't tell if there was a difference or not.

 

On the other hand, if the ear pads are worn out on yours, replacing them will make a noticeable, measurable difference.  The balance of the sound changes when the drivers are closer to your ear with worn out pads, and in particular the soundstage can sound somewhat smaller and with less depth as a result of being closer to your pinnae (outer ears).

After having owned a lot of high-end stuff, I've found the Musiland 02US to have incredibly synergy and drive with the HD600/650 (esp the 650). For $120, it doesn't get any better. Actually, I don't think it gets better until you're willing to spend several hundred more. You guys who're planning to spend money on low-end LD amps and PA2V2s (worse than a good soundcard IME), I would suggest trying the Musiland first...

A few hours ago, I compared the HD 600 to the Sennheiser Orpheus. I still think the HD 600 is awesome. smile_phones.gif

was simply something people noticed first.


An important lesson I've learned over the years is that some things that look good sound bad and vice versa. It's not prudent to judge components based solely on looks. Even measurements get you only so far. The only way to truly determine worth is to listen to the gear.
