I've listened to HD650s for hours on end (friend owns one).  We've compared them and he honestly appreciated the HD600 more than his HD650.  We both own the Denon AH-D7000 so the bass draw of the HD650 is a moot point because we'll just throw those on if I want bass.

I got my HD650s today and man are they clampy right out of the box. I'm definitely gonna have to put these on a pillow for the next week. They sound fantastic though, not as crisp as the HD600s but almost everything is better. Bass, timbre, vocals... I can't imagine how good they'll sound a week from now!

They don't burn in that much. Would love to read an extended impressions post from you on both of them though. Sounds like you are hitting the nail on the head, the 650s are just very musically tuned where as the 600s aren't quite as "tuned".

um.. 600 appreciation thread.. move yourselves to the 650 appreciation thread. lol.

For starters, they are surprisingly good at electronic music! Much better than I would have thought, moreso than the HD600s. I'm extremely satisfied so far. I can see why people like these so much. I didn't even try them with my E17. Went straight to the Lyr.

DAMN these are amazing! The mid bass is just ridiculous... sub bass is awesome and everything, but the HD650s bring out everything besides that in the most luscious way possible. I don't think they sound veiled at all. I'm enjoying the bass so much, combined with smooth forward mids... I think it's safe to say I'll be selling my HD600s. I was afraid the HD650s might not check all the same boxes as the HD600, but they do, and improve on them. To anyone who thinks the HD650 isn't better: Why? What amp do you have? What genres do you listen to the most? What do you love most about the HD600 that you can't find just as well in the HD650, let alone better? I'm genuinely curious.

Well I find the HD650 a bit too rich sounding for certain things, mid-bass hump is slightly larger than on 600's and 600's to me are almost perfect in that regard. Yes the 650's improve in detail and slam; and it's easier to match an amp with it. But frequency response alone, the HD600's nail it. There's a bit too much emphasis in lower registers making it feel a bit slow for certain genres of music. I think the HE-500's are the closest thing to the 650's that I've really really liked; mainly because of the better extension, speed and tonal balance. But that's gone too now.

 

650's are very good with classical/jazz though, or anything where you just want to sit back and take a rest.

 

Do you seek "neutral" headphones like a lot of other people here? Because I like headphones that color the sound a little and make it more fun to listen to.

Here's a question for the 600 owners: what are your favorite genres to listen to with them?

I had both the 600 and 650 but decided to keep the 600. The 650's exaggerated mid bass was too much for me. It just ended up spilling into the mids and kind of muddying everything up. Sometimes some background guitar parts would get lost on the 650. I just think the 600 is tighter and more balanced.
