The HD600 is a can that everyone should own or try at least once. I would agree except instead of the HE500 its the HE6 for me. Hey Rawrster, I've noticed many times we've got pretty much the same stock. I think I had mentioned it before too. He500 -> HE6 and HD800's lol.

A WA6E would be cool with an HE-6. I don't have that kind of money though. My Bifrost+Lyr cost me about $800 and my HE400s/HD600s cost me about $720. I have an E17 which cost me $140 and a few restocking/shipping fees for my returned DT880s and ODAC. Overall I've spent about $1700 on headphone equipment in about a month. I don't need to be upgrading any time soon, but this forum certainly doesn't help me be satisfied with what I have!

I don't like to use the word neutral. I'll say the HD600 is probably the most "balanced" headphone at the price. Some people might prefer the Beyers or Hifimans or Grados and I can't fault them for that. Everyone's ears (and brain) are tuned differently.

I wouldn't consider the AKGs at all TBH. The plasticky upper mid-range and lack of low-end bothered me too much. Maybe I wasn't feeding them off the right amp, but I've heard plenty of similar complaints from others. I feel like the AKGs are a poor man's Sennheiser; in that the Sennheisers do everything that the AKG does even better. That's just my opinion.

If you won't have to starve yourself, yes; otherwise just save up slowly, by the time you have money there's probably a new model and you can get that or the current (for now) for less. I actually prefer the LCD-2 rev.2, and it's the one I can see upgrading to from the HD600 (still waiting to listen to the SRH-1840 though), but I'm in no rush to do so. The HD600 (and 580, 650) are really good enough that upgrades aren't that immediate for me for the next few years.

yeah after doing a few mods I am pretty happy with the HD600s as my main headphones. I might have some fun with DIY cables and what not before I try something else.

I seem to be the only one who gets really weird observations when listening. The K701's I've listened so far were very pinpoint accurate in staging, don't sound too weird (if you're used to speakers), albeit lacking in bass impact; the only weird one I've encountered was when I used one with worn pads with a Little Dot MkII, and it was barely distinguishable from my HD600. With one on even older pads on my Cantate.2, it was more like the a K701 on new pads, but with a much smaller soundstage.

The Q701 I got to listen to once with my Cantate.2 - the bass was muddy and the soundstage wasn't as large nor precise. Demo unit but they assured me it's been run-in for hours on one of the HK Receivers in the showroom. Was considering getting one too; but not after that, until I get to listen to one where the drivers have been broken-in well enough.

Just got a slick deal on some open box, basically new HD650s for $375. Best part: local deal. I'm picking them up tomorrow after work. Gonna sell my HD600s, there's a few people around the classifieds looking to buy some. I'll lose $100 by upgrading but, that is the price difference! Tomorrow is HD650 night!!!

650 isn't really an upgrade. More of a side grade...different sound signature.

You and and a few others have said this; I know they sound different, and I'm going for the smoother, more lush sound signature that is the HD650, so I consider it an upgrade.

Now, after listening to my HE400 last night for a few hours, I put on my HD600 for a more relaxed sound and it was really nice and made me appreciate them more. I'm hoping the HD650 does the same for me.

Hd600's arrived, all I can is that they completely obliterate my previous HD595. Everything is better, more detailed.

Running them from a Xonar Essence for now until I can save up for a proper amp - but that will take some time.

Final verdict: 300€ very well spent
