Somebody Take Me to School

Thread Starter

I've been out of the loop in high end audio since the mid-nineties. I have Levinson amps and pre-amp, B&W Speakers and a forth generation EAD DAC/CD. Interconnects are more current -- replaced in the early 2000's. I just bought a very nice set of both Beyerdynamics (open) and Dennon (closed) headphones and, during the purchases, found HeadFi. I am still a creature
of my time." McIntosh, Krell, Roland,  PS Audio, Conrad-Johnson, Wilson Audio, still resonate anytime that I look at new equipment. I want to buy a nice headphone amp. Always a tinkerer, the Little Dot stuff looks interesting. Is it any good? I like PS Audio's unit but see that they have discontinued it. It took almost two years to drop the cash for my amps -- there was always something better and different. Any help from you all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chip

Welcome to Head-Fi!

The brands you listed are still quite well-regarded. You'd do well with any of them.

The headphone market is still pretty new and the established manufacturers have (so far) mostly ignored us. The good news is that there are a number of brands that are quite good.

If you're looking for a tube amp, be wary of the inexpensive ones. There's a lot I'm not crazy about in terms of build quality and corner-cutting in power supplies. Some of the brands that get things right are Eddie Current (as well as old Moth Audio gear, if you can find it), Donald North Audio and Woo Audio. Avoid SinglePower gear unless you can be assured that it's been gone through by a pro.

If you can get to a meet, you absolutely should. Wonderful way to hear a lot of gear and meet Head-Fi members. Our meets are the best thing going in any audiophile community.
